"GenericClass: waiting for device" message after upgrade to Mac OSX 10.4.11

Hi everyone,
after upgrade to OSX 10.4.11 I can't print with my multifunction inkjet Lexmark X1150 more. I can scan (so usb port and cable are ok) but when I print a document this message appears: "GenericClass: waiting for device", the Lexmark doesn't print and the document stay waiting for the print action.
Someone can help me? I tried with permissions, cleaning printer system, reinstalled drivers (the latest version), but no results.
If I can't solve this problem, I'll have to change my printer. For an upgrade! Uff!

Thank you.

Macbook 2.0Ghz Ram 1Gb Hdd 80Gb combo, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

I fixed my issue with the HP 3180 printer!! Here's what I did:

1. I followed the HP document that I posted earlier step by step.

2. I downloaded the latest drivers/software from HP, reset the printer queues and then tried to add the printer. This did not work at all.

3. I took a look at the error log and found this:

E [19/Nov/2007:21:51:31 -0500] LoadAllClasses: Unable to open /private/etc/cups/classes.conf - No such file or directory

I went out on the MacWorld boards and found that the file in the error is deleted when the printer queues are cleared and recreated when the printer is initialized. So I'm not sure the issue is related to the message.

Since my issues started after I applied the update from Apple from the auto software update that popped up on my MacBook, I decided to try to fix it by downloading the update directly from Apple.com and reapplying it again just in case something was hosed up with the auto software update:

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eintel.html

After it ran, I installed the printer software and drivers and the C3180 re-established connections and printing & scanning work perfect again. Hope this helps!

I can't help, but I can confirm I've seen the same problem on an Intel MacMini. The behaviour I'm seeing appears to be the same as you're seeing, but I also note the system log reports:

Nov 18 19:01:25 blah-computer crashdump[273]: PrintJobMgr crashed
Nov 18 19:01:25 blah-computer crashdump[273]: crash report written to: /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/PrintJobMgr.crash.log

The printer was functioning before the upgrade, but there was more than 10.4.11 in the Software Upgrade, so I can't be 100% it was 10.4.11 at fault.

Reading your posts you seem to have done some if not all of the things I am going to suggest, but with previous point updates, the following steps have gotten a number of Canon printers working so maybe it will help with your Lexmarks.

1. Open the Printer Setup Utility and delete the Lexmark printer queue.
2. Click on the application menu and select Reset Printing System.
3. Close the Printer Setup Utility and then navigate to /Library/Printers/Lexmark and delete the contents of this folder.
4. Navigate to /Library/Printers/Receipts and delete any Lexmark driver package you can find.
5. Empty the Trash and restart the Mac.
6. Install the latest driver available from Lexmark for your model.
7. Open Disk Utility and run Repair Disk Permissions.
8. Open the Printer Setup Utility and add the printer queue again.

If these steps do not resolve the GenericClass error, then can someone post their cups error log back here. You can find this log via System Profier > Software > Logs.

I have the same identical problem with tiger 10.4.11.
I tried to reinstall the latest Lexmark drivers or follow the procedure explained above, but nothing to do: the error remain.
I can't understand what is the point, while i was running 10.4.10 there were no problems.. also on my MacBook pro with Leopard, the printer works.

The same thing is happening to me with my HP3180 all in one. I was fine until I upgraded to 10.4.11. Now I cannot print or scan. I can see the printer in the USB connection, but the "Print & Fax" system control won't recognize it. I tired deleting it, reinstalling updated drivers, clearing all printer queues but nothing. I have a MacBook Pro too and the printer is fine on that, but it of course is running 10.4.10.

Actually, I didn't upgradge; my Mac came w/OS X 10.4.11. My Lexmark X1185 worked fine with it since I got my Mac earlier this year. Then, all of a sudden, yesterday it stops printing. Scans just fine. But I get that same error message "Generic Class: waiting for device" whenever I try to print & I've done all "I" know to do & it still won't budge. Can you PLEEZ give me, step-by-step, what you did to get yours printing again?

Hi everybody, I stayed one hour at phone with Apple customer care and I solve nothing. Or, better, we discovered that problems relative improper closure and printing error arrive from the same device: the printer. Apple says that my MacBook is ok, problems arrive from the old driver of my Lexmark (last driver is dated 2004). So I decided to change my printer (not correct, but I need to work) and I bought a Canon Pixma MP510: driver is new (2007) and Leopard ready too, printer is at the end of this commercial life (the new MP520 is in sale in these days) and I took for 99 euros. Scan and print are perfect and I pay ink less with single ink tanks. Sorry can't help people with more cheap solutions.

It's me again...I've tried some of the tricks noted & even had a knowledgeable Mac-user buddy of mine walk me through quite a few steps (it was a great learning experience!) and my Lexmark still wouldn't print so I purchased an HP F2120 for $38.88 on sale @ Target and everything is just fine.
I decided to use my Lexmark now on my Dell laptop instead. Hate to throw it away when it works perfectly for Windows.

I hope the other steps posted works for others who may encounter this problem. Otherwise, you may wanna invest in a newer printer! But the idea about installing the older driver sounds perfect. Wish I'd read that before I bought the new printer (although I am pretty impressed with it!)

Thanks for everything, everyone!
