GB '08 not recognizing incoming audio. What things can I check?

New Mac Pro, new Leopard, new Garage Band. No input signal.

I have output via MOTU PCI-424 and stuff plays back okay that was already in pre-existing projects but I cannot record audio. The real instrument track just does not "hear" a signal,

So I switched audio input in GB preferences to "built-in Line input, plugged a (tested elsewhere) microphone into the Mac Pro. Still no signal.

I does not matter whether the "Monitor" is set to "ON", "On with feedback protection", or "Off" with or without "automatic Level Control" (if turned on keeps turning itself up until it reaches maximum).

What else can I try?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.5)

I know there's a difference between Tiger and Leopard Mac os x, in preferences, under Audio/Midi

try in *Audio output*: ( built-in out)

and in *Audio input*: (built-in microphone)... instead of built-in line, still use your plug-in mic.

Also, there's a good chance you won't hear audio until you activate the record button. In term of whether the monitor is on/off or feedback it shouldn't matter, i normally have it on or off, try all three.

good luck!

Correction! first of all, i'm not sure if MOTU PCI-424 is an Audio Interface or some internal audio plugin file.
Disregard last statement i made about( Built-in-Microphone) I assumed that you went to Track in your toolbar and clicked *New Track* and in pop-up-window you chose *Real Instrument* then click create.

Personally, i record through an *Audio Interface*, but there's two configurations you can try... not sure if you're plugging directly into your computer; in GB preferences under Audio/Midi, choose in Audio-output(built-in out) and choose in Audio input(system settings) one thing about this config., you will hear playback through computer speakers.

The next one is really for recording through an interface... i personally use this one, and again in both Audio-output and Audio-input choose the (Name Of Your Audio Interface from the list) you will get playback through the interface. It's mandatory that the circular button just on the other side of pan under tracks/mixer just before mute, solo, lock, etc is turned on.

Monitor can be off or on and recording level under monitor should be turned up. Give it a try!

Thanks for everyone's suggestions! I have been away from this discussion group for a while and had stopped using Garage Band. Now I am revisiting this again. I am not sure what I did but I at least got the line-in to work but not the MOTU 2408 (using PCIx) for input. Strangely, the MOTU setup plays back perfectly but MOTU inputs are not "heard" by Garage Band. My workaround is to revert to line input on the back of the Mac for the time being. And yes, I have had this setup working before, but with a G4 not a Mac Pro (and with the older PCI card, so I guess I can't really say it's the same setup, just the external gear is the same). However, because this post was originally about not recognizing ANY incoming audio, and now it is recognizing at least one source, I shall mark this as answered. I suspect the problem receiving input signal from the MOTU gear is likely NOT a Garage Band problem (might be Leopard, MOTU PCI, MOTU 2408, or some external wiring problem). Again, thanks for everyone's suggestions!
