you are correct having a wallpage behind the homescreen will not affect the phones performance but the current method for placing the image there is to hack it into there, which can give the phone problems if done incorrectly and also may affect being able to use future upgrade properly..

question:
When you say home screen, you mean the screen with the icons, not the slide to unlock screen

the slide to unlock screen you can alter that background by sync'ing any photo to your phone then selecting it as a wallpaper

He has more icons because its a hacked version. people have made real apps that run on the iphone, but the only way to install these apps is to hack it (known as jailbreaking).
I guess someone at apple felt that it would be more usable to keep the black background on the home screen to keep it as clear as possible.

And of course, you are quite at liberty to ask your friend to hack your iPhone to do what his does, but it would be your responsibility if it went wrong and it was unusable and you had to replace it and renew your contract.

The warranty would be void.

It might break it.

It might break with any future official updates.

Your choice, your risk, your responsibility, no one else's.

Alternatively just use it as intended, if you want extra features send Apple official feedback, and hope that future updates add functionality.

Apple have already suggested there will be a developer SDK for iPhone apps next year, so you might hack an iPhone now only to find an official solution to increase functionality is out next year - quite whether that SDK will allow for free apps or paid for apps is anyone's guess.

Sumthing, your not understanding. The reason your friend can install all those things and has the installer is because his iPhone is hacked. With it hacked you can do what ever you want. If you got a brand new iphone (USA version) out of the box it would be exactly the same as yours. All the features are the same.

But his phone is hacked so he can add more icons, change themes, install programs, and play games I guess. In early 2008 apple will release a software developer kit so 3rd parties can make real "official" apps for the iphone that do not require you to hack into it.

they are the same software version and the main menu will not show on either version unless it is hacked. And if it is hacked yours is a better version, cause yours will still have a warranty

the us phone has been jail broken, jailbreaking a iPhone voids your warranty

without hacking the iPhone you can not change the wallpaper behind the home screen icons

If your friends iPhone breaks, Apple will not fix it for free
