Reboot problem after 10.4.11 u0pdate

After downloading the combo update to 10.4.11, it reported that it could not update - try the downloads. I left it at that. When I next rebooted I found I was looking at the Apple with the spinning gear for over 20 minutes. So I put in the DVD, and ran Disk and Permissions Repair. Neither reported any problems.

I am still faced with the Apple and spinning gear. I must admit I haven't waited for a period longer that about 30 minutes so far, but why should I?

No OSX boot, unless I choose Windows (via Bootcamp) - and we don't want to admit that publicly, that's for sure.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? If I recover an archive, will my Windows XP partition still be there?

When this happens the only thing you can do is an Archive and Install from the Tiger disk, then run your combo update that you downloaded.

An A & I will not touch any files or apps - except system enhancements - and certainly won't affect another partition.

Thanks for the advice. All back up and working after an 'Archive and Install' - all my personal settigns are still intact.

I might leave 10.4.11 for a while, there seem to be too many problesm associated with it right now. 10.4.8 works OK for me, probably wait for Leopard to settle down and upgrade.

FYI

On my third try, the computer (a G4) restarted successfully after experiencing the same problems described. First try: no spinning ball. Second try: spinning ball after long wait. Third try: Normal startup.
