Can't use google.

Ok, so this is probably really stupid.
for the last 2 months or so I haven't been able to use the google search engine, or anything that connects to google, google images, analytics etc.

so I heaps of web pages I try to look at just don't load.

I use firefox version 2.0.0.9, but I cant get it to work in any other internet browsers either like safari or internet explorer.

anyone have any ideas?

You can use harddrive > applications > utilities > network utility to diagnose the situation.

You can ping apple.com. Result:
Ping has started ...

PING apple.com (17.254.3.183): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 17.254.3.183: icmp_seq=0 ttl=236 time=303.341 ms
64 bytes from 17.254.3.183: icmp_seq=1 ttl=235 time=286.373 ms
64 bytes from 17.254.3.183: icmp_seq=2 ttl=236 time=270.618 ms

If that does work, try pinging 17.254.3.183 Result:
Ping has started ...

PING 17.254.3.183 (17.254.3.183): 56 data bytes

64 bytes from 17.254.3.183: icmp_seq=2 ttl=236 time=259.360 ms

Info for ping google.com address 64.233.187.99

If pinging 17.254.3.183 works but pinging apple.com doesn't. You have a bad DNS Server address.

In this case, you need to enter you dns address. For some reason Mac OS X sometimes doesn't set the dns. You can set it manually.

apple > system preferences > network

tcp/ip tab and enter address of dns servers

example 162.33.160.100

You will need to use a different number.

ok, I'm not sure if i did this right, but this is what happened.

apple.com

Ping has started ...

PING apple.com (17.149.160.49): 56 data bytes

--- apple.com ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss

17.254.3.183

Ping has started ...

PING 17.254.3.183 (17.254.3.183): 56 data bytes

--- 17.254.3.183 ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss

I have no idea what that means though so I have no idea if that means its working or not.

and um.. what is a dns server?

sorry

I think you did it correct, but apple.com has stop accepting the internet pings.

Try google.com

Ping has started ...

PING google.com (64.233.167.99): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=0 ttl=244 time=181.050 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=1 ttl=244 time=238.443 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=2 ttl=244 time=181.697 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=3 ttl=244 time=234.318 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=4 ttl=244 time=173.823 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=5 ttl=244 time=230.653 ms

now ping the address 64.233.167.99
Ping has started ...

PING 64.233.167.99 (64.233.167.99): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=0 ttl=244 time=189.655 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=1 ttl=244 time=213.471 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=2 ttl=244 time=257.873 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=3 ttl=244 time=172.745 ms

-------------

Ping has started ...

PING apple.com (17.149.160.49): 56 data bytes

This says the you have access to a working dns server. A DNS server translates the string apple.com to the number 17.149.160.49. The number 17.149.160.49 is needed to reach the server apple.com.

Try pinging google.com. I do not have a good theory of why you are experiencing difficulties.

hey, thanks for the help guys, but yeh its still not working.
i tried both those numbers and when i used 208.67.222.222 google actually loaded, but it only worked once and it wouldn't access google images or anything.

then i did the ping thing and it did this

Ping has started ...

PING google.com (64.233.167.99): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=0 ttl=244 time=250.144 ms

64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=2 ttl=244 time=232.077 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=3 ttl=244 time=246.793 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=4 ttl=244 time=235.922 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=5 ttl=244 time=233.502 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=6 ttl=244 time=236.065 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=7 ttl=244 time=260.082 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=8 ttl=244 time=235.198 ms
64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=9 ttl=244 time=243.544 ms

--- google.com ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 232.077/240.827/260.082/8.625 ms

i still dont no what any of this means
but thats for the help

Did you put both numbers in at the same time... as shown, one under the other?

Did anything happen between working & not, like Sleep, restart, switching Users?

Do you have a Router you could put those numbers in to also?

Nov 22, 2007 2:04 PM in response to BDAqua

yeah, but when i put both numbers in it still didn't work so i tried each number separately.

ill try again, I've reset my computer since then but i doubt it will make a difference.

ok yeh i typed them both in again. and now i can also access gmail. so the only bits that don't work are images, news and some others.

nope, nothing happened between working and not.

nah i don't have a router, well i don't think i do because i don't no what one is?

lol sorry i don't no any of this stuff

Nov 22, 2007 2:12 PM in response to psuedonym

At this point I think you should get Applejack...
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596

After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...

applejack AUTO

Then let it do all 5 of it's things.

At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.

The 5 things it does are...

Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

PING google.com (64.233.167.99): 56 data bytes

This means that your DNS found google.com and translated it to google's numeric address of 64.233.167.99.
64 bytes from 64.233.167.99: icmp_seq=0 ttl=244 time=250.144 ms

64.233.167.99 which is google.com was found on the internet.

I do not know what is causing your problem. I don't suppose you can try another computer connected to your ISP?

Nov 23, 2007 12:07 AM in response to rccharles

ok, yeh i tried to use google on the other computers in the house, and it worked on the windows comp and the Linux one, so i guess its pretty likely my computer is the only problem one. even my pda connected properly to the wireless and google.

and i downloaded the apple jack thing, umm at first it wouldnt work it kept giving me install error messages and the such. so i just assumed it had installed anyway because i couldnt see any reason why it was having an error.
so i did the thing, but umm i wrote auto in lower case because i couldnt remember the directions.

should i re-do it?
does it make a difference?

also, now my computer is running really slowly, is this like a side effect to something ive done?

Nov 23, 2007 1:35 PM in response to BDAqua

alright I downloaded it and did the thing again. I don't think it did anything, but i don't know what half the stuff it was meant to do was. So for all i no it did lots of stuff but google images and stuff still dosn't work.

Yeah, everything is running slowly. Like I'll click on iTunes and it takes aages to open and then when i plugged in my ipod everything like froze for a bit.

Can't use google.
