How can I format a blank CD in the mac?

I want to only format a blank CD-RW or CD-R disc to the iMac. I don't want to burn anything to it. I want it to be a blank data disc that I can add data to at any time. I looked in the Help section, but could not find the answer.
Thanks

It will format when you burn to it, you don't need to prepare it in any way.

You can burn it from DU, but let me be sure I understand you - why do you want to format it? The act of putting data on it, music or whatever, formats it. Why would you want to burn a blank disc? You want to burn data to it. A blank disc is just that - blank. When you burn data to it, it's no longer blank. New image is for making a disk image.
