Upgrading RAM in 17 inch Flat panel imac

Hi,

I have been reading the posts and would like some clarification re: the maximum amount of memory that can be installed in an imac G4 17 inch flat panel running at 1Ghz. If the factory installed slot is inaccessible, is the maximum ram that can be placed in the SODIMM, accessible slot 512 mb, bringing total ram to 768mb?

Thanks

iMAC, G4, 17 inch, 1.0Ghz with 256 mb RAM, Mac OS X (10.4.9)

There this line of specs refers to your machine's limitations:

"17-inch model includes 256MB of PC2100 (266MHz)
DDR SDRAM expandable to 1GB;one 184-pin DIMM
and one open user-accessible SO-DIMM slot"

While higher end modules may exist of that category, Mac OS X is very sensitive to RAM timing and requirements and may actually kernel panic or not work at all if you attempt to exceed specs or get RAM of not exactly the correct timing. The vendors I list on this page are known to be reliable*:
