Canon MP610 - MP Navigator EX will not open - crashes

So I bought my MP610 yesterday, came home, unpacked and set it up, installed software and drivers - all I want to do is scan something important but MP Navigator EX refuses to open. I went to the Canon site, downloaded and installed latest drivers etc. but the result is always the same... whenever i double click the MP Navigator EX application I get a message saying -
The application MP Navigator EX 1.0 quit unexpectedly and when I click on the option to Reopen I get -
The application MP Navigator EX 1.0 quit unexpectedly after it was reopened
- This is the Error Report -
It's 8 pages long so I think it's best not to post it! However, these are the first two lines -

Exception: EXC BADACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN INVALIDADDRESS (0x0001) at 0x58000000

If anyone can divine error reports I would be happy to post the lot!

Please help - it's so frustrating to buy a product and follow all the instructions to the letter and then not be able to use the machine!

Cheers
Tricia

Thanks for responding Donny. Yes, after installing the drivers that came with the M610 i went to the Canon website and downloaded and installed the two drivers (mp610sosxsd1340ej7 and mp610sosxpd691dj7). I also followed the instructions given a few pages back for someone who was experiencing similar instructions with an (? from memory) M460 - which was, basically, to trash everything, reinstall everything and then go through the 'Add printer' routine. However, that didn't work either.

The strange thing is that if I put a put a document on the platen of the MP610 and press 'copy' - it works. I guess that's because the MP610 is by-passing my iMac in this situation?

The copy function has nothing to do with the software, so that would be why it worked.

You don't need to use the MP Navigator to scan. If you open Preview and select File > Import Image, the MP610s preview window should appear with a copy of your document. You can also use the Image Capture application to do the same thing. Do either of these applications work without the error?

Hi Pahu,

Just checked and both Preview and Image Capture open without a problem. Using Preview, the two photos I had on the platen both appeared, however, there seems to be very little control I can exercise to adjust the scans using Preview.

With Image capture I didn't see how I could import the image - all the options available under File in Image Capture were greyed out. However, i did a bit of digging around and I think that's because I still had Preview open. I also noticed that the screen on the MP610 is saying Place document on platen glass and press (the icon for either the Colour or the Black ink) - I also noticed somewhere else (can't remember if it was Image Capture but it was under a Tab for 'Buttons' and it said ' When (same icon as above) is pressed 'Start MP Navigator EX'.

I really don't know what's going on here ... I've never had a problem installing software before but this has me stumped. I was following your advice to someone with a similar probem using an M460, I believe, but when I tried to empty my Trash I got a message saying the operation cannot be ompleted because the item blah blah is locked. It took me ages to locate a Temp Restore folder and then discover that there were a couple of hundred Microsoft (wouldn't you know it) Macros that were all locked. However, that problem has been sorted now and the Trash is empty.,

Problem is, I really bought the printer so that I could scan and print a heap of old images into albums as a Christmas present for each of my brother and sister - looks like it's going to be a hard slog!

Cheers, and thanks for taking the time to respond

Hi Tricia,

When you scan with Preview, there should be a Canon application window that lets you select a portion of the image you have just scanned. You should also have other settings that let you adjust the resolution, the colour and whether to scan from the platen or adf. (At least this is how it is with my MP600R, so I have assumed the 610 would be the same).

With Image Capture, you get a similar preview pane, and the Scan button is disabled until you select a portion of the preview image by dragging your mouse from one corner to the other. Once you do this then you will be able to scan.

Don't despair with having to use Preview or Image Capture to get your images. Once you learn what to do you will find they offer more than MP Navigator, which in my opinion is an awful application.

Hi Pahu,

Many thanks for the lightning fast response - I'm going out now but I'll be back in a few hours and will check it out then and report back. I was hoping that I might be (somehow) able to use my (old) Photoshop 7 to adjust some of the scans - would this be possible, do you think?

I've bought the Leopard OS but haven't installed it yet because I'm concerned that (among other apps) MYOB Account Edge isn't supported and that's something I really need to have available on a daily basis. Bummer!

Hi Tricia,

I believe you should be able to scan directly into PhotoShop 7, I certainly can with PS CS3. Then you will have all the control you need.

I know what you mean about Leopard. I've been testing pre-release versions for months to ensure it would work with a number of our office applications. I was lucky to be able to do this on a test mac so when it did have trouble, and it certainly did, at least I didn't lose anything important. Now that the update is out, I have let some users make the switch, and in all honesty they have gained very little with the new OS - its mostly eye candy. Can I suggest that before you do switch, you backup all your important docs, save your bookmarks and internet settings, and check the MYOB web site for the latest. It may save you a lot of extra heart-ache.

Might not be here when you get back so best of luck and I will check in tomorrow.

Hi PaHu,

I think I'm getting myself into the deep and sticky here. I've not used Image Capture before so I read through the Help files before I started - it seemed quite straightforward and I was able to set Adobe Photoshop 7 as the app. that the print colour icon on the MP610 'links' to (i.e. the button that is either 'colour' or 'Black') I also changed the field next to 'Automatic Task" from Preview.app to Adobe Photoshop 7. However, as soon as I clicked on overview and selected the area I wanted to scan (even though I had two photos on the platen I could only select an area of one of them - is this normal?) and then clicked the Scan button I got the message advising 'The application Image Capture unexpectedly quit. Nothing else is affected blah blah blah.

I went to Finder and double clicked Image Capture, this brought up the Scan dialogue window headed 'Canon MP610 Series' The fields are -
Download to:
Name:
Format:
Automatic Task:
Occurs after scanning

Then there are two buttons at the bottom of the dialogue box - the one on the left says Options...
the one on the right says Scan...

Clicking either of these buttons causes the return of the dreaded message 'The application Image Capture unexpectedly quit etc. etc.

It seems that whether I use MP Navigator EX, Preview or Image Capture as soon as I try to Scan it causes the app. to 'unexpectedly' quit. I've never had something like this happen before so I'm not sure what could possibly be causing it.

Should I uninstall the whole Canon Utilities folder and start from scratch - I just can't work out what's going on at all.

I'll be back on the boards later this morning but that's it for me for tonight!

Cheers

Hi again PaHu,

This morning I decided to start all over from scratch!

I remembered that a couple of years ago I had a Canon Digital Ixus 400 point & shoot camera and had installed from disk some apps. for that camera. Sure enough, when I checked in Finder the Canon Utilities folder contained CameraWindow, FileViewer Utility, ImageBrowser and PhotoStitch apps. as well as the apps that were installed with the MP610. I thought that one of these other apps may have been causing a conflict so I trmobrf PhotoStitch to my Applications folder and trashed the entire Canon Utilities folder, then I went to Library and trashed the Preferences relating to Canon and also the Receipts. I then did a Spotlight search and trashed everything that mentioned Canon (no half measures here). I then emptied the Trash, Repaired Disk Permissions and Restarted. After Restart I repaired Disk Permissions once again and installed the MP610 software from the install disk, repaired Disk Permissions, went to canon.com.au and downloaded the updated printer driver (mp610sosxpd691ej7.dmg), repaired Disk Permissions and restarted. Repeated the procedure for the scanner driver and, finally, everything seems to be working!

Thank you for all your help and perseverance with me on this - no doubt I'll be back with more queries as I come to grips with my new all-in-one!

Cheers
Tricia

Hey,

Glad I found this thread. I have the same problem where MP Navigator EX will crash whenever I try to open it. I don't have any other Canon equipment (not that I have installed on this Mac) but I went ahead and trashed all the Canon stuff installed by the CD and followed the same process as Patricia but no luck. One difference is the Preview and Image Capture utilities work just fine for me. Any ideas? Would love to get this resolved.

Thanks,

Chip
