I think the answer is no. The iPhone uses Edge for things like the voicemail, SMS, and some of the values in the network settings like your time on, standby etc. Some of that data is communicated via Edge.
I've never tried it but I don't think AT&T will let you cancel the data only portion. If you can and you succeed, let us all know.
No idea on the $0.00 thing. I have no idea what that issue even is.
Sorry, could you enlighten me about that ATT prepaid plan, please? Would that be available for foreigners then? I couldn't find anything on the ATT website other than the 2 years data plan.
Currently, I can only buy the iPhone in Germany where I live - I would love to have some deal that would allow affordable data useage while abroad!
Back in July there was posts from other iPhone owners reporting they were no longer getting the $0.00 balance messages for their data plan.
One thing to keep in mind, is those messages came from automatic access to EDGE, and each times those occurred without the iPhone Data plan there would have been a charge.
I read that if you cancel the data plan, you will not be able to upgrade your phone when there is a firmware update (like 1.1.3) or you have to restore your phone, and that you will have to add the data feature back again before the phone will re-activate. Can someone confirm whether this has been their experience?
