Error -1309 while saving IMovie file to external HD

Request help on finding out what error code -1309 means. I was moving an 11G IMovie file to an external HD. This error popped up seconds before the action was complete. I tried looking up the error code on Apple website but found nothing. Appreciate whatever help you can provide.

That hard disk is likely in the FAT32 format, which cannot accomodate files 4GB or larger. If possible, use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to erase the drive in the Mac OS Extended format; otherwise, the file needs to be segmented.

Hi!
I'm getting the same error 1309, will you please help me step by step to erase the drive in the Mac Ox extended format?. I openned the disk utility and I don't how to do it. I'm new on Mac systems. Does this erase my information on the external HD?
These is what I get, after running verify disk option.

** Phase 1 - Preparing FAT
** Phase 2 - Checking Directories
** Phase 3 - Checking for Orphan Clusters
38495 files, 297694112 KiB free (9302941 clusters)

Thanks in advance.
