Motorola Razr to iPhone Question

I know that this question has probably been addressed at some point in time before, but I just wanted to get a clear response. Right now, I have a Razr (from Cingular/AT&T) and have just a regular sim card. It makes calls as usual. It can also get to the Internet, but that costs extra money. I just want to buy the iPhone for the phone, iPod, etc., but not for the Internet on the EDGE network So my questions are:
1) Can I even put a sim card in the iPhone? Meaning, can I buy an iPhone without a contract or anything, put my sim card from the Razr in it, and still get the phone, iPod, movies, etc. without having to pay some extra fee for data?
2) If the answer to the above question is yes, if I didn't keep the EDGE network on, would my monthly bill just be the same as before (on the RAZR)?

Thanks and Happy Holidays!

1. No. You must use the SIM card that comes with the iPhone and it will not function in any way until fully activated with an ATT contract. You can of course port your number over.

2. Your bill will depend on whether you keep your old voice plan and just add the $20 iPhone data plan or choose a completely new plan, which starts at 59.99. Either way, you must take an iPhone data option, you cannot just have voice.

Having said all that, why wouldn't you want the data portion of it? It's really quite fun to have!

In a word, no.

None of the iPhone functions work except for the ability to make an emergency 911 call which is mandated by the FCC until the iPhone is activated with AT&T. You can keep your current calling plan but the $20/mo unlimited data plan which includes 200 SMS is required when activating an iPhone with AT&T using iTunes which is the only way to activate an iPhone with AT&T.

You can probably use your existing SIM card which won't change anything in this regard so you should use the SIM card included and pre-installed with the iPhone. The iPhone does not store contacts on the SIM card and it isn't possible to transfer contacts stored on another SIM card to the iPhone direct from the SIM card by inserting it in the iPhone which won't provide for using an iPhone with AT&T even if a SIM card from another AT&T phone.
