Static in line out (headphones/speaker)

I have a condenser mic and have not had any problems until now. I don't think its the mic as when I plug the headphones into the "phones" jack on my mixer, its fine. However, when I plug the headphones into the line out (headphone on the back of my IMacG5 there is static like noise when I talk into or touch the mic.
What are the possibilities?

iMac G5, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Thank you isteveous- I did two things I am not sure which worked. I looked at little closer at the clipping issue and found the red dots lit up to the right of the master volume. I unclicked them and also moved the USB cable that comes out of my mixer (the adapter) from my USB hub, to directly to my Mac. The problem went away at least for now. I do think perhaps it was indeed clipping.

Thanks
