OK, I will try and help you out, took me a while but working fine now. When I tried to connect to the internet I had the same problems, but if you get it right all the imformation should be filled in automatically for you.
When I opened settings/wifi my ipod found 3 internet connections, my home, next door, and a house about 4 doors away lol....but mine is locked with a Wep key, neighbours is unlocked and other is locked.
But i couldnt connect to the net with any of them just kept saying "cant find sefver", so this is what I did, hope it works for you and others...

go to settings/Wi-Fi make sure its ON.......below where it says "choose a network" you might see several ip connections... i.e. ur neighbours!!

If your home network as a Wep password which is a mixture of numbers and letters, you need the password....mine is a Belkin router, so look in your router manual to find out how you access your "router setup utility" it will most likely be a set of numbers looking something like this 123.456.7.8 just put those in ur address bar and hit enter...
from in your utilities you should find your Wep password...REMEMBER the Wep password is case sensitive, write it down!

right back to the ipod, settings/Wi-Fi .... find your home connection from the list ..click on blue arrow to go to next page...now click on "forget this network" dont worry it wont delete your router.

get back to the Wi-Fi page and click on "other"....use keyboard that pops up to put the name of ur router, "your SSID name".....then the password if your router is security enabled i.e. Wep or Wap code.....

REMENBER! think this is where alot of people are going wrong when you enter the password it is "case sensitive" in other words if part of the password is "b4" it as to be entered as b4 and NOT B4............

to alter from CAPS to lowercase you have to touch the arrow up key, bottom left, everytime you enter a lowercase letter uyou need to do this,it will go brighter when you touch it....

then hopefully when you have done that hit "Join" and it should find your router and everything is filled in for you, i.e. ip address etc..

Once I had done this, I can now use my home network or the neighbours as he dont use a Wep, in other words his connection is open for all the street to use lol..

I would advise anyone to use a Wep key.

Hope this helps you and others out, let me know how you got on....

Im also having problems connecting to safari using my BTHomeHub. I finally managed to connect to it on my ipod touch but when i try to go on safari i get an error message. It says "safari cant open this page. The error was: Operation could not be completed. (POSIX error 12 - cannot allocate memory)(NSPOSIXEErrorDomain:12)" What the **** does all this mean? I cant even use safari, youtube or itunes on public networks because is says "cannot find the server". Do i need to configure my ipod or something? AAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!

Testrow, I have had exactly the same problems too,a week and a half of it. I have now sent the Touch back to the UK customer service Dept. Would not connect through to the Internet even though the thing was connecting to my home network..............or said it was had the network as shown here.... (tick) belkin54g > I run an unsecured connection. Would not work with any other unsecured connections that I picked up in my local Town either....if the replacement works (I sent it off today at 3.15 PM, so may be a while) I will post on the Forum to let everyone know if it may be a Hardware problem. Was driving me nuts trying to get it to work!
