Questions about AVCHD format

I'm trying to decide whether to buy AVCHD or HDV.

Two questions for those of you with AVCHD cameras:
1) About how long does it take to import a 1 minute clip?

2) How much storage space does a 1 minute clip take up (natively, as well as after it's transcoded by iMovie)?

Thanks

HDV importing is less "processor intensive", and should import in "real time" on a MacBook Pro.

AVCHD camcorders tend to store their recordings on the camcorder's internal hard disc, on memory chips or on miniDVDs. So where do you keep the original footage if you want to re-use the hard disc or the memory chip(s)?

HDV is generally recorded on (cheap) miniDV tapes. Fill a one-hour tape and just stick in another one ..and keep the originals for as long as you want, e.g; for several years.

See HDV samples here.

Both responses were very helpful and confirmed what I thought was the case. Now the question is: will Apple release an update to iMovie that allows native use and editing of AVCHD files? Unfortunately, I don't have time to spare so I guess I'll be going with HDV.

Thanks for the replies.
