iPod won't connect to my computer correctly

When I plug my iPod Classic 80GB into the computer the screen of my iPod freezes.

It is recognised as new hardware when plugged into the computer but does not appear in iTunes.

When I first purchased my iPod it connected to my computer fine, but now that it has music on it it is failing to connect properly.

My computer only has USB 1.1 ports, could this be the reason?
If this is the case, is there any way to work around it without having to update to USB 2.0?

Thanks

I've had my 160gb classic for over a week now but finally the kinks are worked out. After reading the forums on here for hours over the last few days, I've learned a lot.

Have you reinstalled iTunes yet? Try that 1st. Then, make sure you do a reset of the iPod. I've also read on here people recommending doing the reset also, once you're actually connected to your PC in iTunes.

You may need to restore the iPod to its factory default settings and start the whole process over. I don't think the USB 1.1 connection should matter. It will just transfer/charge much slower overall.

Let me know what happens and best of luck!

I've had a similar experience. I just purchased the IPOD Classic (80gb) a few days ago. It originally synced up nicely. Out of nowhere, the IPOD froze, as did my O/S (Vista). I executed a System Restore on the O/S, and also reinstalled iTunes again (v7.5)

Since I was unable to do anything with my device, I let the battery run out. Hoping that I would be able to reconnect the device to my PC and recharged the battery, and thus unfreeze the device, it was not to be.

At this point, I have the device connected to the PC 9charging), but it continues to turn on and then off. I see an Appe insignia for a few seconds, then nothing. If the PC is not recognizing the device, how do you go about trying to reset the device?

I'm ready to get a replacement, but am hoping someone can assist.

Thanks,
