Can't burn

Can't burn

Lately when I go to burn a CD I get the following message: "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry."

I try another CD and it sometimes works. I'm guessing it's working about 1 out of 3 tries, maybe 50/50. Is this simply my burner going bad?

Emac, Mac OS X (10.4.10), 384 MB

Can you burn properly in Finder or other programs?

Nope. The "burn window" seemed to show it was working but when it was "finished" there was only only a little burned section on the disc. I put it into my boombox which registered 1:56 but when I hit play there was silence.

If it won't work in Finder as well, you're likely looking at a drive issue. Try testing it in a new user and see what happens. That may further narrow it down to hardware vs software.

Timmy - could it be possible that the discs are bad? I'm using TDK CD-R. I've been told that I should be using CD+R. Would that make a difference?

If the burn speed has been changed, try it on x4 or x8
a lower speed has a better chance of burning
if that works, bump it up to what still works

Also try an external drive if you have one

I've been using an external drive to store my audio files. sigh

I also have it on 8x burn. Still no change.

I'm going to my local Apple Store this morning to the Genius Bar to get their diagnosis.
