Safari won't open certain web pages

Hi,

I can't get Safari to open certain web pages. This has only been the case for the last week or so, I could happily view them before.

2 examples are : www.facebook.com and www.quaysws.co.uk

can anybody please help, it just seems a bit weird...

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

What happens when you try to access those pages? Do you get any errors?

Hi,

The blue bar starts moving in the address page and then it says that it has failed to open the page as it cannot find the server. It is fine from another computer, so I guess the server at the other end is fine...?!

I have opening it through Google as well and this doesn't work either...

Hi,

What happens if you try to load this address:

http://204.15.20.80

That should load facebook.com directly, rather than using your DNS settings which might be slow responding. If it does load quickly, then try using some alternative DNS settings, such as those supplied by [OpenDNS|www.opendns.com].

I tried this and and it failed to open the page. The message said that safari couldn't open the page as the server stopped responding...

Have you tried turning off your router/modem for a few minutes and powering it back up? A few people have had success with this.

What other things have you tried? We may as well avoid repeating things you've already tried 🙂

It is part of a wireless network at my workplace, and all other sites seem fine and pretty quick too.

I have tried checking Safari preferences and then ensuring the correct boxes are ticked, i've emptied the cache a few times and i've tried opening these pages in Firefox as well, but still they won't open.

As I say, the strange thing is that I was happily viewing these pages about a week ago...

For what it's worth, www.quaysws.co.uk doesn't work on Windows XP/Firefox here either - maybe the website is simply down?

As for facebook.com, could your work be filtering out the site? I'd expect a 'not permitted' type of page rather than a 'can't find' page though.

Technically speaking its not a work wireless network, it is public wireless called Cloud that is in hotel where I live and work.

Hi David,

Nothing springs to mind I'm afraid.
Does Safari work ok from a different user account?

You can create a test user account via System Preferences -> Accounts -> \[+|-\] (and later remove it if needed)

Rats...

Unless anyone else has some better ideas, I'd suggest trying [Camino|www.caminobrowser.org] to see if that can access those sites for the time being.

to open in both Safari and Firefox. Mind you at the same time, I cannot get Apple.com to open in Safari 😟 I'm running Leopard with Safari 3.0.4. Whoa Safari just decided that Apple.com does exist and opened it without me first having to restart the computer. Safari definitely has some bugs but you may want to make sure that you don't have any 3rd party add-ons set up and you may have to reinstall.

Thanks for you help still...

Tried downloading Camino and Navigator, but still pages won't open! I'm guessing something must have gone very weird with Leapoard would it...? I've only had this Mac for about 3 weeks now...

If it's any consolation I have the same problem Safari won't open www.laithwaites.co.uk . I had no trouble with this until last week and I've tried all the suggestions. Have you solved your problem yet?
