BIG issues with 10.4x software update today - someone please help !!

Hello,

I have a 17" MacBook Pro, running 10.4 and the beta of Boot Camp (I bought the machine ~ 9/1/2006).

Today, while working normally, I was "pinged" by Software Update that there were updates ready to install. I said "go ahead".

Halfway through, I received a message similar to "Software Update has encountered an unexpected issue, you must restart".

I selected restart. My machine will no longer boot (on the mac side), getting to the final (~100%) "blue line" on start up screen and than hanging.

I have tried many times (and also let it "think" for many hours) to no avail.

I just returned from the local Apple Store "Genius Bar" (a whole other story - not pleasant) where they tried to boot from CD, but the only option is to erase the entire drive and all data to do so. Since I have not backed up my device, I said to not do that. The cause is apparently a known issue with the latest software update of 10.4 with the beta of Boot Camp. (as a "known" issue, I for the life of me will never understand why that was not made clear to the user BEFOREHAND).

Unfortunately, that option is not good for me (shame on me for not backing up my device) as I have years worth of email, all of my music and videos (thousands of songs) and pictures as well as 100% of my cycling training data (which is downloaded via a device whenever I ride) for the last two years.

Apparently, they claim there is no other option (they also do not see any issues at all with having a update that can cause this type of catastrophic failure without some sort of indication of the risks thereof - i.e, "please back up all of your data before installing this upgrade)

I need to find a way to restore my device to working order and recover my data. Apple claims (both in-store and on the phone) that they do not do data recovery nor do they know who does or how to do it.

Does anybody have any ideas/options for me?

1. Advice on how I can work around this (preferably without a erase)
2. If I do have to erase, how can I recover my data?
3. What happens to all of my purchased music/video from iTunes if I cannot recover?
4. How I could find all of my software licenses (which are all in my email, which I can't access) for downloaded applications?
5. How to feel less stupid and borderline sucicidal?....:-)

Thanks in advance for any help or advice....

Geoff

All,

After a most of a night and all of a day, this worked...!!!

Two remaining issues:

1) printer configurations: my printers are on print servers, and I struggled to get them set up originally, and have no idea how to reconfigure them again....sigh. anybody with familiarity with Netgear print servers and Macbooks, I am all ears....

2) Itunes. i cannot get Itunes to reimport my saved TV shows and Movies. When I choose add to libray - nothing, when I import, nothing, when i drag and drop - nothing. All of my music went back fine......

ggalat,

At least things are working. I can't help with iTunes TV and Movies. But, you've your music. I suggest you post over in the iTunes forum area and perhaps one of the gurus over there can help. I use a linksys print server and I would suspect the set up should be similar. What I would do is get into the admin area of the server and set the IP address to a fixed address. Then launch Printer Setup Utility, select Add. Then select IP printer and then Internet Printer Protocol from the drop down menu. Put in the print server address and then fill out the other info. See if that works.

Although my problem isn't as severe, since the 10.4.11 update, I have to restart my machine, in order to access the internet via airport, if the machine is put to sleep. when I wake the machine, recognizes my network but the safari window tells me I'm not connected to the internet. It has only done this since the latest update a couple of days ago. Anyone have any ideas?

Add me to the list of unfortunate Intel Mac (mini) users who clicked on the install and got FUBAR. This is unbelievable! Is this Apple's way of encouraging people to upgrade to Leopard? Let me know if there is a better way than to slave the drive on a fire-wire boot while holding "T" key.

What buttons to hold down to boot from CD - please advise.

Thanx,

Hoopesie

I have had the same problems as everyone else in updating to OS 10.4.11, but I have a solution. The first time there was an error in the update, so it quit automatically. I was having problems launching applications, so I restarted the computer. I then had the gray Apple startup screen that would not progress past that point. I started the computer from the installation disk by holding Option while the computer was starting up, insterted Install Disc 1, and selected that disk. I then reinstalled the operating system (OS 10.4.6) from that disk while selecting the option to archive my previous data and preserving my settings. After about 1.5 hours of reinstalling the older version of the OS, I was able to start the computer without a problem. The archived data can be found on the Macintosh HD in a folder called Previous Systems. Perhaps stupidly, I tried the update to 10.4.11 again. This time there was no error message during the update, but upon restarting the computer, I was once again stuck on the gray Apple screen. I repeated the OS installation from the disc again without a problem. Currently I am downloading the Combo 10.4.10 update to update my system to the last version at which I had no problems. It would probably be best to post this reply after I see if the 10.4.10 update works, but I need something to do why it downloads.

Based on this, I have a few suggestions:
1) Don't install 10.4.11 until Apple addresses the problem
2) If you are having problems after installing 10.4.11, then reinstall the OS from the installation discs, and be sure to archive your previous system and settings during the installation process
3) Backup your system. If you have an external hard drive, then use it to backup the entire hard drive if possible, and it not possible, then at least backup your essential documents and email. You can also use an iPod as a backup external HD, which you can find out how to do elsewhere in the Discussions. I would suggest doing this before updating to 10.4.11 to avoid the nerves that come with concerns of loosing data on a failed backup.
4) Backup your system (Part II). Before every update and every few days or weeks Backup your system or key documents. Coincidentally this is what Time Machine in the new OS X Leopard 10.5 is supposed to help with, so hopefully this 10.4.11 problem is not a twisted way of Apple getting people interested in easier backups by buying Leopard.

Well, the 10.4.10 update is almost downloaded, so I'll tend to that now, and let everyone know how it goes.

I had a similar problem in that the pdater ran then told me there was a problem and to run the updater again. I restarted and got a kernal panic. Fortunately, I had 10.5 installed on another hard drive.

I simply started up from 10.5 and re-ran the 10.4.11 Combo Update from within 10.5. The updater allowed me to select the 10.4.10 HD for upgrade, which ran smoothly.

I re-started from the newly updated 10.4.11 and everything is fine now.

I took a chance and it worked for me, I can't guarantee it will work for anyone else. Please proceed with caution.

Sig,

Solved the iTunes issues.....I had not yet installed the new version of Quicktime (7.3) to match the 7.5 iTunes, so iTunes did not recognize the video files. Once QT was updated, all the videos went back seamlessly.

I also got printing working again via some trial and error......

Thanks again for all your help

Geoff

If you have access to another Mac that is still working:

1. Put the 'broken' Mac in FireWire Disk Mode (reboot while holding down "T").
2. Attach via FireWire, the HD shows up on the desktop.
3. Download the 10.4.11 Combo update and re-install it on the "broken" Mac. Make sure its the "Combo" update. Get it by searching for "10.4.11 Combo" at apple.com/support
4. Reboot the "broken" Mac, it should just work now.

If you have a bootable external drive (always good for troubleshooting and recovery!), boot the "broken" Mac to the external drive and follow the above steps from 3.

It can be really quick and easy to fix. Hope this helps.
