Reminders in published calendars

When I publish a calendar in iCal, it gives me the option to publish alarms; however, when I subscribe to the same calendar in Outlook 2007 and Gmail, the alarms do not seem to carry over to either as comparable reminders. Is there something I'm missing, or is it just impossible for Outlook and Gmail to understand iCal alarms as reminders? I'm using the latest version of iCal with a .Mac subscription.
