i cannot download new iTunes

Could we just clarify exactly where you are at.

Did you successfully download the iTunes installer - iTunenes75Setup.exe - from the Apple site, http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ ? Did you save it on your PC before attempting to run it? - the desktop is a good place to save it.

What is the exact text of the error message you get when you try to install iTunes now.

When you say you deleted your previous iTunes do you mean you uninstalled it using Add/remove Programs? If so if that process run normally or was there an error message?

I have EXACT same problem. Message says it is missing a file and cannot uninstall my old version (3.0.8) of iTunes. and to contact my support group...! ALso, now the older version doesn't recognize my iPod shuffle. So - though all my tunes are physically backed up, I can't use the iPod for love nor money.

I'd even be happy to install an older version if I can get functional again.

Try downloading the iTunes installer direct from Apple rather than using Autoupdate.

When it asks you if you want to run or save it, save it to your desktop and try running it from there.

If you get an error message, give the exact text in full.

"The older version of your Apple Software cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group." Checking the older version, and it's 7.3.2.6.

When trying to uninstall old version, it says there is a network resource that is unavailable. It says to find an "itunes.msi" file. When I located these in Windows downloaded installation files (there were 3 - updates I guess), and I input the location of these files, it couldn't access them. I'm guessing they went the way of the dodo.

I have also sitting on my desktop the ipod installer, but it's waiting for a new version of to be installed.

If can get confusing dealing with different problems on the same thread, but for your particular issue, it sounds as though you need to use the Miscrosoft installer cleanup utility.

Instructions below:

Download a fresh copy of iTunes and the stand alone version of Quicktime

Download and install Microsoft Installer cleanup utility, there are instructions on the page as well as the download. Note that what you download is the installer not the program – you have to run it to install the program

Now use the following method to remove iTunes and its components:

If you hit a problem with one of the uninstalls don't worry, carry on with the deleting of files and folders as directed in the method.

Restart your PC.

Run the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility. (Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up)

Remove any references you find to the programs you removed - strictly speaking you only need to worry about those programs where the uninstall failed.

restart your PC

Install the stand alone Quicktime and check that it works.

If it does, install iTunes.

I could not download the new version of Itunes today. I got a message that said "The Older Version of Apple Softward Update cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group." I tried both downloading from Apple's website and also after saving the download to my desktop.

I'm on an HP computer with XP. After seeing what happend to others who deleted various things, I'm not going in that direction. Can anyone help?

Ok. I've done ALL of the fixes, and the new installer seems to have removed mky old iTunes. I still am unable to load on the new Quick Time OR iTUnes. I get the same old message "The older version of Apple software update cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group".

This message appears for both the Quicktime and the ITunes set up.

I still have my very old original cd. ANything on that of any use?

So...ummm...it sounds like we Windows people should not install the new version of I-Tunes (7.5). Does this mean we are SOL in terms of future upgrades?

I did try to install it once, and canceled when I got an error message.

So fortunately, I'm still running fine with the previous version.

Is Apple working on this problem? How will we know when it's "safe" to install this upgrade?

Okay, so I'm trying to install 7.5 I get a small explorer window, and it says 'You are not authorized to view this page' and has the following information: If you believe you should be able to view this directory or page, please try to contact the Web site by using any e-mail address or phone number that may be listed on the appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net home page.

I don't know why I'm getting this: I don't know if it is a problem with my computer or something else. < sigh >

Did you remove Apple software update with add/remove programs? Did it uninstall normally and did you remove references to it with the cleanup utility?

Another thing you could try is to delete your temporary internet files ( In Internet explorer acess via Internet Options>>General>>Browsing History>>Delete>>Temprorary inernet files.)
Also empty your Windows temp directory - there are instructions towards the bottom of this Apple article:

under i tunes support click on trouble installing itunes and quicktime software in windows..scroll down to general installation troubleshooting. click on clean up itunes installer files on the computer. it will bring up a page for you to install windows install clean up. intall it, it will then tell what to do, make sure you follow instructions completely. and you will then have to restart your computer and redownload itunes, but it worked for me. I have been without for weeks..
