iTunes skipping to the next song before the current song is done playing

So, ever since I upgraded to Leopard and put all of my music back onto my computer, I've noticed that my iTunes will skip to the next song before the current song is done playing. And it's not consistant between songs... some songs will do it early on (<10 seconds) some songs will do it later on in the song (>1 minute) and some songs won't even do it at all. I reinstalled iTunes to see if that would fix the problem, and it did not. So, what's the deal? Could there be something wrong with my music files? HELP ME!

I'm having exactly the same problem. It happened after I moved my music library from my PC to my Mac (after a few failed attempts due to poorly PC)

I have over 6000 songs, and it has affected songs throughout my library, including purchased songs, and I only find out which ones, as I come to play them.

Re-importing is an option, but to be thorough, I would have to do my whole CD collection. As for the purchased songs, I'd have to put them onto CD and re-import them. This does work, as I've tested it.

But surely there is an easier fix. It's just like iTunes/iPod has simply 'forgotten' where the tracks end. The whole songs are still there, and if you skip passed the point where it 'thinks' it ends, it will continue and play to the end of the song.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem without re-importing?

Regarding re-importing:

There is one very irritating problem with re-importing.

In the time since I originally imported my CD collection (about 2 years ago) it appears that the Gracenote Database that iTunes uses to gather the info, has altered the details of a lot of CD's. For example, if it is a single, it may have added (single) to the end of the CD Title. This means that it creates a new file and you have to then delete the original files.

Not exactly a major problem, but very irritating, especially considering that it will also affect any 'Recently Added' style, smart playlists.

I have disabled crossfade, including any third party plugins. I have also changed most of iTunes prefs randomly to see if that fixes the problem, and un-inistalling/re-installing/deleting preferences. It does not. I cannot listen to my music via iTunes and I am considering dumping iTunes for a more reliable player. It may be the best player, but with this problem, now it is among the worst.

Could this be due to corrupt files? I noticed one file this happens to seems to be messed up. Claims to be a 6 minute song but the file size reads 1,016 KB. This can't be true. Watching iTunes, it plays the song then skips to the end suddenly and goes to the next song. I can start the song at any part of it and it plays it, meaning it has the full song yet claims to be under 1MB which I know is not true. I'm leaning towards a corrupt file.

I have had to rip all the songs from my iPod on to my computer to restore it so I didn't lose any songs that I didn't have on my computer, at least not my 2nd computer.

I'm wondering if this had anything to do with it or if it's a corrupt file to begin with.

I have same issue with ipod/itunes skipping to next song after about 10 seconds. This occurs in my mini system which is running itunes 7.6.1. After much frustration, I connected my ipod to my ibook which is running itunes 7.4.2. I reset the ipod and loaded my music from this source (I use an external drive to store music so I'm pretty sure my music source files have not been corrupted). My ipod's (both) now play without skipping! I would assume the upgrade to 7.6.1 was my downfall (note I have not upgraded to 10.5 as yet). From reading these strings, it appears upgrade to Leopard is not the answer. I will try uninstalling itunes and reinstalling the older version to the mini next (I use the mini and airtunes for a home system). Is apple aware of this issue?

So I noticed this thread for the same issue I'm having.

First, my iTunes library is on an external disk on a remote machine on my local network. My understanding is that this is an issue with AFP from 10.5.3 on. I guess this bug made its way into 10.5.4.

I started playing the same song that kept skipping, and I found the following in the console log every time the song reset:
kernel AFP_VFS afpfs vnopstrategy: Cached read on <song file> failed 13

So that's a little more information. Anyone out there have any suggestions? I've opened the firewall settings and I've had no luck there. File sharing is on both machines, and still no luck.
