INTERNAL TARGET FAILURE when burning a DVD with Toast

Have problems with my DVD drive. Nothing is mounted on the desktop when I insert a blank DVD.(or even a DVD with stuff on it) When I try and burn a DVD, during the burn process I get a dialogue box: "Drive reported error Sense Key= HARDWARE ERROR
Sense Code= 0x44, 0xD9 INTERNAL TARGET FAILURE. The disc is then ejected. I have an external Sony burner and I get a dialogue box that says: Sense Key= MEDIUM ERROR Sense Code= 0xOC WRITE ERROR. Both of these problems are intermitent. Any help would be greatly appreciated. tia

G'day Hunter,

I hate to rain on your grief but you are not providing anything like enough info to diagnose whatever problem you might or might not have:

What G4 precisely.(it could be anything from an old slow g4 350 to a relatively new dual cpu job.
What Burner inside precisely. what firmware therein ?
How much & how many HD Drives connected how ?
EXT SonY: What Burner inside precisely. what firmware therein ?
Sony Drive connected how ? What else on that Bus ?

What media are you putting in the drives ? What does disk util say about drives and media ? What does Toast say - when u use it ...

you say "When I try and burn a DVD," with what ? What media/type/brand... What software ? Finder ? Toast ? ALways Toast ? If so, what version & what happens when u try Finder or other/something else ? What type of DVD?? Video? ROM? FAT? other ?

Suggest u use apple system profiler (apple->about this mac -> More) to get all these detaiils .. check all are up to date .. post here.
ASR and Disk UTIL will tell u all about the drives and media.
Apple hardware test on yr OS install disk will test the drives.
*The OS has an option you can set:*

*when a blank disk is inserted :*
*1. ignore*
*2. let finder handle*
*3. load application xxx.*

*which is it ?*

Elsewhere you say you have 9-10 GB avail (bad idea) . How big is the boot drive? - Firstly, you shd (and Apple tell you you shd) always leave approx 20% free space on a NIX based OS.

If You CAN burn a DL blank in your INT drive, That alone could take over 8GB OF SPACE FOR THE DISK IMAGE .... and then there are swap files, logs, work areas ..encoding areas... (Can we say'AAAARRRRGGGHHHHHH'! ?)..

BUT,

even w/o all the necessary info (which you can find with a quick ASR and Google,) I'd guess:
1. your ext Sony doesn't like DL media.{it says 'medium Sense error'}
2. Your Internal optical drive has a hardware problem {[it says 'Hardware error'.. it's probably either very dirty, misaligned, maligned or broken- particularly if it won't even read yr Mac OS X Install & Test disks (try THEM in the Sony)

It's more likely to be dirty than broken. It'll probably cost as much for a 'proper clean' as to buy a newer, faste4r writer and replace it yrself... (which is why I have abiout 4 for the g4/733 grin)

Are BOTH these problems really intermittent ???

{oh yeah, and, for a while, I'd be using RW media grin}
Put a single layer in the sony, and, along with all the above, report back.

best of luck,

but pls try to remember that there are a googleplex of combos of hardware, firmware, software etc out there .. and itm's almost impossible todiagnose a problem w//o the relevant info - ALL of it .

[Oh - and the 'Medium sense' can be anything from cheap/marked media to trying to burn too fast - as in 4x in a 2x medium {no matter WHAT it's marked} insufficient buffer...other apps interrupting..,.. - start burning everything at 1x and see if 90% of yr probs don't go away}
