You changed it at (Settings -> General -> International -> Region Format)? Or the language too?
Cause if I change any of them it does not help...

sometimes - but i dont have the sim card in the phone all the time, because i have it in my old phone to be able to recieve calls.

I had no luck either. I tried two one SIMs, synced several times, reseted - no result.

Somewhere I read (maybe it was at allesapple) that Saturn is selling the iPhone with an A1 contract. Maybe that's the reason why Christian's phone is working?!

Has anyone tried with the French one yet? It is slightly cheaper.

Hm I dont know about the deal, but i couldnt imagine that apple sets up the phones for a1 while t-mobile is going to have them in Austria in 2008...
I will play with my phone after the work is finished and will write email to heise, and stern, maybe if the publish some stuff apple will recognize the bug and help... Please never forget to post and write and call whereever you can, i am not giving that device out of my hands again! 😉

But will the french ones work outside of france, germany or the uk? We allready have unlocked phones which do not work...

Check this: very strange! Can you reproduce it??
I remove the sim card and start the phone.
I set "Setting -> General -> International -> Region Format -> German -> Germany" push home go to sms
Use numpad to add number - go to text field and you can add text
Or you can mess with the numpad at the phone or view your recents!

THAN!

I set "Settings -> General -> International -> Region Format -> German -> Austria" push home go to sms
BAMMM! App crashes
Phone - Keypad - 0 -BAMMMM! Crashes!

The thing is- even if i set it to Germany and insert my SIM Card it crashes again.. but! it is interesting.

I have the same problem: I bought a "free" iphone at Saturn-Store in Vienna.
I was told to unlock the phone with Itunes, it worked well, and the IPhone recognized A1 as the carrier.
But as many of you reported, the phone apps don't work. I can't recieve calls, sms, ....
First I talked to the guys at the store: the've told me to wait 24 hours until the iphone is completely unlocked (?!?!?!)...
Well, it didn't work.
So I talked to Apple: they knew about the problem, but told me to talk to tmobile germany.
to shorten this report: nobody could tell me, how to make my iphone work properly.

yes, I've tried to set the region to germany, but this didn't work either.

so I don't have a clue how to fix my probems at all...

Hi Mika,

From what I understand there are similar grumblings in the US Congress about this very subject right now. Apparently they are trying to pass a law that prohibits carrier specific phones. In other words, they want to make it so that you can purchase any phone in the U.S. and use it with any U.S. based carrier.

Should be interesting.

I´m reading this thread serveal days - having the same problems you have.
I`v been talking to t-mobile de, apple-care, t-mobile Austria, a1,... no result.
Same problems, no sms, no phone manuel, no caller-list, no incoming calls.
Yesterday I talked to apple-care again. The technical-support wanted my error-logs and told me to make a forced-reset by pushing the home-button while connecting the iphone.

First no result.
After a view minutes (phone to apple-care finished) the phone-apps worked. (sms ok, calling manuel ok, caller-list ok) incoming calls couldn`t be tested, because after a view minutes the phone had the same problems again.
I didn`t change the settings before and after.

Could anyone explain?

Hmm... Apple iPhone doesn't work with closed groups, your GSM provider should set on their commutator your IMSI out of their any closed groups, then it would work fine.

Strangest thing of the disfunctions is that not all phone functions don’t work. A few works even fine. In addition to the errors, I can:
- Call people from the contact list.
- Call people from the favorites list.
- Get SMS messages (only reading is not possible).
- Internet surfing via the GPRS network.
