Unlocked German iPhone not working

So I had the pleasure to give Apple and T-mobile 999 euros for an iPhone. After 30 hours it activates in iTunes but there the glory end.

* I can't call the phone (the hourglass just runs and then the phone jumps out to screensaver)
* I can't open the SMS app after receiving SMS
* I can't open last-calls list
* I can't dial phone numbers in the dial-app.

Are there anybody else who has this problems?

I use an unlocked German iPhone with Swedish carrier SIMs (Telenor and Telia).

Patrik

I bought it in Lübeck, 11 hours drive from where I live in Stockholm... I use Swedish carrier Telenor and have also bought a prepaid SIM card from Swedish Telia to test if it is the carrier, but it's the same problem.

The thing that confuse me is that people are using iPhones in sweden (not official unlocked) and they don't have this problem....

I'm going to sleep now, but will continue again tomorrow.

Although this wasn't in Apple's or T-Mobile's plans in Germany, the iPhone is being sold in Germany as carrier locked with T-Mobile and there is also a legal unlocked version sold at a significantly higher price. This is due to a lawsuit filed by Vodaphone in Germany against Apple and T-Mobile with the possibility of this being temporary only but Apple will provide support for their unlocked iPhone currently being legally sold as such by Apple and T-Mobile.

The same will apply in France with a carrier locked with Orange and an unlocked version to be sold which is required by law in France.

None of this applies to iPhones sold as carrier locked which have been unlocked by using a hack.

There have been several reports that the T-Mobile shop has to activate some phones (why some and not others, I do not know) using their demo SIM in the shop - after that initial activation all functionality works OK with other SIMs (once the database has been updated to include the phone's IMEI).

I have bought the 999,- EUR unlocked phone and activated it using iTunes after approx. 24 hours and all SIMs do work (I tried my German T-Mobile, French and Thai SIMs), all functionality except for visual voicemail do work with all SIMs.

Maybe the German SIM-free versions are only SIM-free for any german network, after all, that is all the german law requires.

Nope. What the German law really requires is currently not clear - the unlocked phones are sold under a temporary injunction. The next hearing is on Thursday - it could as well be, that T-Mobile can legally return to the previous model after that - at least until the EU finds a valid regulation that covers more than only Germany or France (which makes no sense in a harmonised market).

The current injunction does not mean "german networks" it means "unlocked" - there is no difference between German and other SIMs and/or GSM networks. Remember that even US iPhones work globally (OK, there is no EDGE in some places...). I have used my phone in France yesterday, with a French SIM, and it works perfectly well.

You should really talk to T-Mobile. They are the reseller, not Apple. And they are bound by European regulations - means, they cannot legally ignore you, just because you are in a different country in the EU. If they indeed need to restore and unlock the phone in their shop, they should have told you right away. Now the least thing you can expect, is them to pay shipping and provide expedite handling of the issue. If they really refuse to deal with it (I really doubt that), you can report them to the commercial inspectorate and call a few German newspapers and TV shows. This is always a great success.
