Disk Imaging...

Hi,

In windows i use acronis to create an image of my windows installation in external usb disk and when i had problems i boot throgh the acronis rescue cd and will restore the image from external usb hdd.

Is there a way to do this in leopard? or any other programs similar to acronis available for mac. I also would like to image my bootcamp windows installation in addition to leopard installation.

Thank You

Hi,

imaging your OSX partition can be easiyl done with either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper
But SuperDuper is not yet fully Leopard compatible.

SuperDuper http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
Carbon Copy Cloner http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html

For Bootcamp Windows it depends on what File System you use.
For FAT32, see here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=717201&start=0&tstart=0

For NTFS, you can use WinClone: http://www.twocanoes.com/winclone/

Have Fun

Hi,

Thanks for your answer. Here are some more questions... Using CCC or superdooper needs a firewire external drive right? or can i clone it to usb external disk and restore it from there? As i came to know that i have to boot through the firewire image in the external hdd and restore it from there. (Correct me if i am wrong). Whether usb external hard disk will work this way or Do i need to have the firewire external hdd.

Thank You

Yes. Intel-based Macs, like the MacBook, can boot from a USB drive. (Older, PowerPC-based Macs need FireWire hard drives.) However, in real-world test, FireWire 400 always outperforms USB 2.0 hard drives. If you're going to be backing up often, you might want to save some of your time using a FireWire hard drive.
