iPod Nano Won't Turn On!

Hey Everyone,

I got my Nano this morning, and already I'm having troubles. The Nano has been working all day, but 2 hours ago I had my Nano plugged into my PC while I was fixing album cover art on iTunes. I was finally done, noticed my nano said it was done charging, and I clicked the disconnect button next to my iPod in iTunes. My Nano looked completely normal and functional.

I then removed the USB cable from the computer and plugged it back in.

At this point I got the White Screen of Death. The Nano wouldn't shut off. After some work, switching the hold button back and forth and holding down the Menu and Select buttons, the Nano finally shut off.

Now I can't turn it back on.

I have tried restarting my computer, changing USB ports, all to no avail, as my computer won't recognize that any hardware is plugged in (neither will iTunes). I have tried holding down just about all key combinations on the Nano (menu + select, play + select, play + menu, play + menu + select) for a good 10 seconds and I still get no response.

No matter what I do my iPod won't turn back on.

I spoke to a friend who said it was a common iTunes bug where disconnecting can crash your iPod and/or your PC, and his advice was to let the battery run out and then recharge it. Apparently its fixed the problem for him. However, since its already off, thats not an option.

I need advice. I appreciate links to Apple's support documents, but since the support database is out, a summary of the instructions would be nice as well.

Still not working, I followed the advice on Apple's support database by following google cached links:

None of the advice in either of the two articles has helped me. I haven't tried out waiting 24 hours yet, but some sleep and further frustrations will certainly add up to 24 hours in time. I've executed all instructions with the Hold button tried in the on and off positions.

Help needed!

I scheduled a meeting with an Engineer at a local Apple store. He said he didn't know what was wrong with it, only that he couldn't fix it (note: engineers capabilities in 'fixing' things are extremely limited since they don't do any hardware checks in-store). He recommended I replace my Nano in the store or call Apple for a new one so that I could have my engraving again.

HELLO,
MY IPOD NANO 4GB 3G DIDNT TURN OFF
I FOLLOWED THE "HOW TO RESET" INSTRUCTIONS
THEY WORKED FOR ME
ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS TURN ON THE HOLD BUTTON ON AND OFF ABOUT 3TIMES
THEN HOLD IN THE MIDDLE BUTTON AND THE MENU BUTTON AT THE SAME TIME FOR ABOUT 10 SECONDS UNTIL THE APPLE LOGO APPEARS
THEN PRESS BUTTONS UNTIL THE MENU COMES UP
DONT WORRY` BECAUSE ALL OF YOUR SONGS WILL BE SAVED ONTO IT

I HOPE I HAVE HELPED YOU =)

HEY! I also had the same problem and I have been up for so many hours figuring this out, and I found a solution by Ryan from a forum and it worked! Here it is...

-Connect the iPod via USB to your computer.
-Put the iPod into disk mode (push the select button and the play/pause button when the apple logo appears without the backlight for a few seconds until it shows it is in disk mode.)
-Click on My Computer
-Right click the iPod driver
-Go down to Format...
-Select FAT32 (_DON'T do a Quick Format_)
-Then restore your iPod in itunes.

It should work beautifully, my iPod is currently charging right now and I'm crossing my fingers that that won't happen again! Good luck!

How many times do you actually have to try this "reset" procedure before it actually works? My new 3rd gen 8GB nano is dead. It's not taking an initial charge. I've tried the reset procedure 20 times to no avail. My 2nd gen 2GB nano is charging just fine, so it's not a USB or computer issue. It's a 3rd gen nano issue. I'm increasing frustrated...help!

I had the original Nano a few years ago, and that persistently died on me so gave up with it. I got the new Nano for Christmas, was working fine until just now. It's completely dead.. can't reset it, can't charge it. No response whatsoever. Done all the reset combinations and whatnot.

So, what now? I'm going away this weekend, was hoping to use it then but looks like I won't be able to. Brilliant.

Ridiculous how many people have had problems like this with iPods over the years. Apple really need to sort it out.
