Ever since installing 10.4.11 on two macs, I can not connect to the computers via the network. Bother computers are PPC, odly enough I have a thrid computer Intel Mac, also running 10.4.11 but it can connect to both of the PPC macs.

The computers show up in the Network window, but when I attempt to connect I get a broken alias message. Sometimes it will connect, but after I type in the password and choose the volume I want to mount, it gives me a "server disconnected" message, and I have to click "Okay". I've tried restarts, I've tried deleting Network prefs. I've tried running utilities like Cocktail. Nothing. Can anyone suggest what the problem is, and how to fix it. Many thanks in advance.

PowerMac G5 - Dual 2.7 GHz, Mac OS X (10.4.11), 8 GB RAM, 512 GB HD

Have you tried from the Finder... Go menu> connect to servers...,then typing...

    afp://ip/of other.mac

i think the broken Aliases is due to using DHCP and the Macs being turned on/rebooting in different orders... hence Mac#1 boots, gets 10.0.1.2, Mac#2 boots, gets 10.0.1.3...Mac#2 boots, gets 10.0.1.2, Mac#1 boots, gets 10.0.1.3.

AppleJack does a better job than Coctail, last time I checked...

Might give a try with Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596

After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...

    applejack AUTO

Then let it do all 5 of it's things.

At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.

The 5 things it does are...

    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

    Hi BDAqua,

    Thanks for your quick response.

I have tried the "Go->Connect to Servers..." Most times it gives me a message saying the "Server Connection Interrupted" or "Connection Failed. The server may not exist or it is not operation at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again".

I have the computers set with static IP's, so I don't think the aliases have the wrong IP assignments. My desktop (PPC) is always 10.10.10.30, my other desktop (PPC) is always 10.10.10.20 and my laptop (Intel) is always 10.10.10.10

I will try to run Applejack....see if it produces any results.

    Mark

Okay, I ran applejack on both computers, to no avail. I'm still getting the same problems. I try to connect to the computer by double clicking it in the Network window, and it fails, spitting up a "Connection Failed" or "Server Connection Interrupted" or "Broken Alias" message.

Okay, so I've discovered that the AppleFileServer crashed. When ever I try to connect to my PowerMac G5 desktop from either my PowerMac G4 desktop or MacBookPro, it will crash the File Sharing on the G5, and this message shows up in the console:

    Nov 27 12:01:42 Computer-Name crashdump[1197]: AppleFileServer crashed
    Nov 27 12:01:42 Computer-Name crashdump[1197]: crash report written to: /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/AppleFileServer.crash.log

And the crash log indicates the following:

Yup, that did it. I too found the macosxhints page earlier today, and was going to post of my success. Thanks everyone for the help. What a tough one to track down.
