G-Tech G-DRIVE Q 500GB Quad Interface Hard Drive or LaCie d2 Quadra 500GB?

Hi,

Okay I was all set to get the Lacie d2 Quadra 500 GB drive for $296.00 Canadian as I'd heard from people on this site and others it was a good one to buy.

Then I was on apple.ca yesterday and saw the G-Tech G-DRIVE Q 500GB Quad Interface Hard Drive for $319.00 Canadian and I get Macworld and that is always on the Top Product list. Should I get the G-Tech one instead for only $23.00 more?

Thoughts? Does one have more features then the other? I see the Lacie has a one button backup option but not sure about G-Tech.

For iMacs, a 'quad interface' external drive doesn't offer any more capability than a
'dual interface' USB/FW800 model. iMacs have no eSATA interfaces, and FW800 is
fully compatible with FW400 -- all you need is a 9-pin to 6-pin adaptor cable ($3
from newegg.com or monoprice.com).

Don't know 'bout prices in TheGreatWhiteNorth, but at US prices, you could get an
extremely nice USB/FW800 enclosure plus a premium-quality 500 GB drive *of your*
choice for under $200.

With "prepackaged" external drives, you have no control (and usually no knowledge)
of what drive mechanism you're buying.

The Looby,

Thanks for the tips. I don't really know what I'm doing as far as cases are concerned. That's why I just want to get one that has the whole thing so I can plug in and go. I've also heard OWC is a very good place to buy as well as they use the Oxford chipset.

I checked out reviews on both and Macworld gave the G Tech a 5 star and the Lacie 4.5 so they both sound good. There were negative user reviews on Lacie at CNET but I think that was because they were on PC computers.

Yep, I understand, hardware geekdom can be very confusing.

Amazon.com has a good prices on LaCie -- 500 GB D2 HD Quadra @ USD $183
that's price-competitive with any of my home-grown specials.

...favorable customer reviews, too,
