PB3400 wireless TCP/IP trouble

My PB3400c 180MHz running OS9.1 has a Dell Truemobile 1150 PC card and Orinoco wireless software. The card will connect to my Airport 802.11b network and picks up a strong signal. TCP/IP is configured to use the "Orinoco" card and DHCP. However the server assigned addresses just stick to the Powerbook internal ones and fail to "pick up" the AP ones. Hence there is no connection to the internet.

Any suggestions please?

When you select "Using DHCP" in OS 9 TCP/IP Control Panel AND CLOSE THE WINDOW to save the changes, the IP address field is cleared until the DHCP Server is forced to respond with a new IP Address. Any operation that force Internet activity (such as setting the time from a Time Server) should cause the broadcast and response that gives you a valid IP Address.

What Address do you observe there that makes you say "just stick to the Powerbook internal ones and fail to 'pick up' the AP ones"??

If it is of the form 169.254.xxx.yyy, that is from the group called "self-assigned" IP Addresses, which you give yourself when no one else will talk to you.

AS you say the IP address fields are blank when I close the TCP/IP panel. After failing to connect (iCab) the re-opened TCP/IP control panel reads :
IP Address 169.254.166.179

Now the base station has assigned the Powerbook the address of 192.168.2.6 in the DHCP client list ( it was 192.168.2.4 when I successfully connected via ethernet) and this is what I expected to find in the TCP/IP panel.

In summary TCP/IP via ethernet and DHCP = OK. Ditto via Orinoco and DHCP = no go.

If that card is really compatible with the orinoco driver, and you are having trouble with the orinoco driver, consider removing the orinoco driver and using the latest OS 9 Airport driver for your Mac.

Note: AirPort software for Mac OS 9 included drivers for Lucent WaveLAN, Agere Orinoco, and certain other third-party IEEE 802.11b-compliant PC cards. These drivers are not included in AirPort software for Mac OS X. For this reason, it is possible that an 802.11b card may work when started up from Mac OS 9 but not when started up from Mac OS X.
