For some reason, when I chose to enter the IP/Gateway/subnet information manually, the DNS information has to also be entered manually now in Leopard... this was not the case in Tiger (and Windows)..... the DNS should be pulled automatically from the router ... (usually using the same gateway/router IP)....
The DNS information is pulled from the router using DHCP. If you specify a manual IP address, you're telling it not to use DHCP. Have you tried setting "Configure IPv4" to "Using DHCP with manual IP address" in the Network pref pane?
I can confirm that this does work as intended. Using DHCP with Manual IP Address provides automatic DNS. Setting to 'manually' will not, as all information need to be entered manually then.
Tested it and I receive DNS when set to DHCP with manual ip
I'm just curious because if I remember correctly, in Tiger, it did pull the dns information from the router when set to manual, while still pulling the DNS when pull the gateway/subnet information w/manual IP.....
What router are you using?? My old router was a WRT54G v2 and I always had my computers set to "DHCP with manual address" and it worked fine in the past. However, I had to get a new Linksys router, W54G v8, and my Macs running Tiger will not get connected using "DHCP with manual address". I can get them to work with straight DHCP or manual IP.
Has anyone gotten "DHCP with manual IP address" to work with a Linksys WRT54G v8?
The other way to accomplish this (having your machine assigned a static or fixed IP) while using DHCP is via using reservations.
I am not sure which routers support this - but effectively it means that based on your MAC address the DHCP server will hold and provided the same IP address just for you.
My netgear FVS338 does support this... but I don't run DHCP on that or my AEBS - I rely on my Windows 2K3 SBS for DHCP.
