Apple releases firmware 1.0.3 for Nano, Grab it from iTunes while its HOT!

I'd like to know what's fixed/changed. Can you offer any info on that?

The release notes just says "Bug Fixes" (again) with no other details.

However....

1) Restarting the Nano & disconnecting from iTunes now has a little whizzy progress bar along the bottom
2) *Large photos not displaying* has been fixed!

...I'm hoping the nano-hangs-on-connect-to-PC problem has been fixed also but more testing is required to verify that...

Anyone found anything else?

Forgot to mention:

3) TV-Out settings seem to be persistent
4) The "Clicker" can now be set to "Speaker", "Headphones", "Both" or "Off" (instead of just "on" and "off")
5) Cover Flow feels a bit slower?

I can update on a few things that are NOT fixed:

1. The Nano still ignores the Start Time setting on podcasts in the Options tab and starts a podcast at the beginning even if the Start Time is set to a value greater than 0.

2. It will still not play converted audiobooks (m4b files) at the faster or slower rate.

I'm not too happy on this update. My scroll-wheel doesn't move as smooth anymore and when I go over Shuffle it tells me I have 1 more song than I actually have.

I updated my nano 3rd gen to 1.0.3, and then set an eq preset on some songs. I was able to sync afterwards, which I could not do with 1.0.2, so that problem seems to be fixed.

Sorry to hear you are not satisfied with the new firmware.
Just to inform others:
- IMHO, something HAS changed in the click wheel. I get the feeling that it is even more sensitive now.
- Can't confirm your other finding regarding song count. The count I get in 'Suffle Songs' is correct.

I think I agree with you. Maybe not with the click wheel sensitivity, but there's a general feel of sluggishness with 1.0.3.

I think it might be something not releasing resources / CPU quickly: most obvious manifestation is that the scrolling song title in the "now playing" screen slows down, but I can easily demonstrate it by the effect on the right-side of menus:

1) Start with a "sleeping" iPod (hold Play/Pause to turn off)
2) Hit Play/Pause to turn on.
3) Hold MENU to return to the main menu
4) Note the right-side of the menu behaves as expected: nice panning photos / album art / clock etc
5) Now start playing a video
6) Hold MENU to return to the main menu
7) Note the right-side of the menu is now a blank(ish) grey background, no matter what option you've selected
8) Depending on how lucky you are, either the normal floating-pictures will re-appear on their own or you'll have to do something like start a tune playing and then going back to the menu to restore expected function.

I should also note that the iPod feels slower to start/stop using the PLAY/PAUSE button too.

In summary: I don't think they've adjusted anything with the Click Wheel itself, but since the Nano is generally feeling sluggish, the effects of using it make it act too sensitive....

I can confirm this. I got to step 7, saw the grey background, and then step 8 occurred in less than a second and I saw the floating pictures again. I repeated this several times and it was always this behavior: a sub-second pause with a grey screen and then normal pictures floating by.

Does this update fix the problems that users are having with the Nike sensor kit where the voice feedback is providing the correct distance run while the visual display of the ipod reports a different distance?

i didn't notice that sluggishness until i've read all your post...

anyways, i think the one good change they made was removal of that splash screen when you open the iTunes while your ipod is connected. remember that "register, do not register, and continue" buttons everytime you plug your ipod with iTunes?

that's gone now. YEY!

After just installing v1.0.3 and re-syncing I have noticed:
a) Restart includes a progress bar
b) Disconnecting includes a progress bar
c) Contacts now include full notes !! (this is a big plus: they were completely absent before)
d) photos were re-optimized and re-loaded/synced
e) the quirky behavior of Calendar sometimes displayed and often not displayed
and same for Notes (sometimes list of Notes is displayed, often list is a blank screen)
