Q: Problems with Roadrunner email setup

Has anyone else had issues with setting up a Roadrunner email account in 10.5? The automatic setup gives me this message:

Trying to log into the SMTP server "smtp-server.neo.rr.com" failed. Make sure the user name and password you entered are correct, then click Continue. If the information isn't correct, you cannot send email."

I have verified that my information is correct, and have even tried to manually set things up. The same exact e-mail address and settings worked fine in 10.4. But, after upgrading to Leopard, the Mail application won't cooperate.

Can anyone please help?

Who is your ISP, and are they the provider of the email account that is not working? Is it RR?

I am having a similar problem here in Columbus OH with insight rr but only with trying to send an email to one specific email address - the one set up on my Windows laptop. I have no problems sending any other emails to any other address. The email address I use on my PC laptop I take on the road is the same email address I use on my iMac desktop but the number "2" at the end of my name in the email address. I have done this for 2 years this way, but I changed last month from a Windows PC desktop to a new iMac desktop. I need to be able to email certain customer documents to my laptop before going on the road for business

I forgot to mention that I am able to send an email from my PC laptop email address to my iMac email address AND I am then able to successfully replay back. But I am unable to compose a new message and send it from my iMac to my PC laptop email address.

Very strange - any suggestions please.

I've been having the same issues as everyone else. A solution for me (which was even easier for my problem). I could send email via wi-fi but not through 3g or E. I went in and turned off the smtp for roadrunner as my primary server. So email bypasses the roadrunner stuff and goes straight to the att 3g. I guess this is a temp fix but obviously the problems lies with roadrunner's smtp

Thank you thank you thank you OP. i have been beeting my head against the wall. This is my first mac and i have had it for about 5 days now. I support MS Exchange and it was driving me crazy why this would work. It failing on RR was causing gmail to not work also. i had to register just to tell you thank you.

    Solution found!

Like, tribus said on the first page of this topic, "the main issue with RR SMTP is that they don't require outbound (SMTP) authentication"

    Solution:
Under the SMTP server configuration, select the "Advanced" Tab. Pull down the Authentication menu and select "None". Click OK.

    Done!

I also set the custom port to be 25 even thought that is coved by the default (just to make sure Mail does not choose the wrong one).

Thanks to your post I am able to now send mail with Roadrunner. I could receive but not send. Roadrunner could not help me. Using your steps I saw that there was no password in the incoming mail server. When I put my password in I could send mail. Thanks.

Many thanks for solving a longstanding Mail/RoadRunner problem which wasn't found on Apple Site Support and which Apple Tech Support could not fix.

Thank you for the wonderful thread.

I even called to the Roadrunner and they couldn't solve the problem.
    They should know this problem!!!

Still a very useful topic even under Snow Leopard! I tried to set up Mac Mail on my brand new iMac, and had problems. Then I recalled I also had problems with my Mac Book Pro under Leopard, and that I had to go online to find the solution. So, many, many months later, I have found myself revisiting this thread. Glad it's still here!
