Different docks for different spaces

Is there anyway to have different docks in different spaces?

It's hard to understand what you are really asking since you are using the words Dock and Spaces together. Spaces are part of the Dock.

Do you mean can you have 2 Docks in different locations on your screen? Like one on the bottom and one of the right?
If that is your question the answer is no. There is no supported way of doing this. It may be possible to duplicate the Dock using a different name which will in theory allow you to run two instances of the Dock. But I doubt this would work since both Docks would be trying to use the same preferences.
Actually that trick does not work, just tried it. It works sometimes with other apps but not the Dock.

Can you clarify your question?

There are some freeware/shareware tools that let you manage multiple Docks but on one can be active at one time.

The short answer is "no". The long answer is "definitely no". Spaces doesn't really give you multiple desktops. It just a gives a quick way to hide and unhide things. hence no different docks or backgrounds for different spaces. which is really too bad. I'd really like to be able to use different backgrounds for different spaces - it would make it much easier to identify the space you are in if you are using a lot of them.

The only way I know of to do this is to build docks with DragThing (www.macupdate.com) and assign them to particular Spaces. I would check out the DragThing website (www.dragthing.com) and ask questions before setting it up - the designer is very responsive. I only have one DragThing doc now, specialized to writing, and it appears only on my writing Space in Leopard. I don't know if I could assign other DT docks to other Spaces, or if I have to assign the entire DT app to a space...

but it's an idea!

I understand what you are asking and the answer is NO.

Although I have been using WORKSTRIP for 3 years now and it is one of the best pieces of software that I own; however, they are no longer around.

Seemed they were scared off or stopped due to the news of spaces and thought Apple would put them out of business when it came out.

Contrary to what Apple and the makers of Workstrip think. Spaces is a waste of time.

Workstrip allowed you to have as many different work "spaces" that allowed you to have different backgrounds for each, different folders and apps for each strip, and the strip can ne located anywhere on the edge of your screen. plus clicking on the folder and app icons in the strip allowed you to control so much more.

I have a work space for Video Editing, Music recording, writing, web design, school, programming, gaming, and utility work. Each with the appropriate applications available to me so I do not need to have the dock loaded with every app I use, nor do I need to go to the app folder to find it, I just click on the work area I want it changes the picture and the strip and I go.

Again, unfortunately it is no longer, which really depresses me. It is a must have. My productivity has changed since I found it at Mac world expo many years ago. And when ever I go to work on other macs without it, I am completely frustrated that they do not have it, that and exposé, and I have to go back to the stone age and open folders to find things. ARGH!!

Turn spaces off, it is a faux working area that on the surface looks cool, but does not make productivity any faster.

I can see why some folks would enjoy Spaces, but for me it adds an additional layer to my existing habits for managing multiple open apps. It's more convenient for me to hide/unhide open applications, and to use the Dock indicator & faded icons to keep track. I use the Dock icons, Spotlight (as launcher), or apple-tab to navigate between open apps.

I would like to see different desktops in each Space. This would allow me to have, for example, a graphics desktop, a web desktop and a writing desktop. I could set up icons for specific workflow-related apps in each desktop's Dock. Different backgrounds would be helpful: a neutral grey in the graphics workspace would help in Photoshop. [I currently use Think
http://freeverse.com/apps/app/?id=70130 to mask the desktop.]

Thanks,

Mark
