Shooting at 48fps and need to edit in 48fps

I want to shoot in 48fps on an HVX500 using a P2 card, when I import the footage in FCP can I edit in a 48fps setting? If so how do i set my setting/options to do so?

You can't. You shot an unsupported frame rate. When you drop it into a 23.98 timeline, you'll be forced to render, and when you render, every other frame will be removed. And you will be forced to render every time. AGAIN, 48fps is intended ONLY for creating nice slow motion for the supported frame rates. It is not a supported editing or delivery frame rate.

You can try this trick....but I am not sure it will work.

I appreciate your help, I am gradually learning HVX cameras, P2 card transfers, and FCP. I was asked to research this before a shoot tomorrow. They are requesting a part of the shoot to be shot in a 48 fps speed, saved onto a P2 card and then transfered into FCP. I was asked to inquire, when shot in X fps ,recorded onto a P2 card into FCP what setting needs to be changed in FCP to maintain the speed the media was captured in.

You need more than ONE DAY to research and test before a shoot...

First off...WHAT WILL YOU BE DELIVERING AS A MASTER? This is the KEY question to ask...and the key thing to know BEFORE YOU SHOOT.

For example, if you are required to deliver a 1080p 23.98 master on HDCAM or D5, then plan your shooting accordingly. Either shoot 1080pa24 (you'll have to reverse telecine after you import) or 720p 24PN (that will get you 23.98fps right away) and then edit 23.98. Outputting to 1080p 23.98 is a breeze. THis also works if you are delivering a DVD.

If, however, you are delivering a 720p 59.94 master, then it might be wise to shoot 720p 59.94, or if you want the film look, 720p24...NOT PN...so that it has the 24p look, but still runs at 59.94fps. Heck, even editing at 23.98 you can output to 720p 59.94 just fine with a capture card. We tested that and it works.

If you want slow motion...really nice looking slow motion, you can then shoot 720p60 at 59.94 or 720p60 at 48fps, and use the DVCPRO HD Frame Rate Converter to make it into really nice slow motion. THIS...I hope...is what you are being asked to do. Because there is no such thing as a 48fps timeline...it just isn't done. 23.98...29.97...59.94...25fps. That's it.

And there are EASY SETUPS in FCP that you use for any given setup. 720p23 is 23.98...720p30 is 29.97 and 720p60 is 59.94.
