Leopard Scanning Workaround, from HP support

Leopard killed my scanning abilities on an HP AIO, but they sent me a relatively easy workaround in the meantime:

*Scanning Workaround Leopard*

+Open MS Word or any MS Office application.+
+Go to Insert+
+Select Picture+
+Choose From Scanner or Camera+
+It will ask to choose a device, make sure it says HP LaserJet Scanner+
+Follow the steps you would normally use.+
+It should scan the document into the MS application you open.+

You can than save it to a PDF file.

THANK YOU!!!

I run a business and scanning is critical for my billing. I called HP support just 5 minutes before I read this and they were NO help and did not argue with me when I said "this make a mac user feel like HP doesn't care about mac users."

Again this works great on my LaserJet 3390 (wish I didn't have to use a work around but that is a whole other story).

Thanks again,

D

PS Maybe HP should teach all its customer support people this work around!

I have a new, all-in-one CM1017 MFP laser for all our home use. I called HP about a week ago. They cleaned up my stuff (already loaded form their disc) and then downloaded a new version to fit Leopard version 2. Everything works perfectly.....I can scan to email - file, etc.

And I do NOT work for hp.......

Could it be that easy?

nope.

In my case unfortunately not. I have an HP PSC2510 All in one (AIO). Trying through MS Word only resulted in a pop up box saying "Unable to connect to Scanner or camera. Check the connection & reinstall driver if necessary"

same here with a PSC1350.

So still ' scanless' here.

Same here.

HP Tech No Support finally got back to me after my attempts to get action on this issue.

<quote>Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.

Unfortunately, our HP engineers have decided to not create software compatible with Mac OS 10.5 for your printer due to the age of the printer. This means that we are unfortunately unable to guarantee the ability to scan into your computer.

The standalone functions of the device (ie: Copy), will continue to function. As will the print function, which was included in the operating system by apple.

To access the printing function. Click on the apple and select system preferences. From there, click on the print and fax preferences. If the device is not already connected, connect it at this time and then click the plus sign. Highlight the printer, then click the add button. If adding multiple printers, make sure to set the appropriate item to default after you are finished adding.

One option for your unit is HP's upgrade program that will allow you to trade your unit in for another upgraded All in One product. If you are interested in the trade up we will arrange for a support specialist to call you with the details.

This should resolve the issue. If you need further assistance, please reply to this message and we will be happy to assist you further.

You may receive an e-mail survey regarding your e-mail support experience. We would appreciate your feedback. </quote>

I got the email survey regarding my 'support experience'. Indeed, I got it several days before I got a reply. I filled out the survey. I suspect that HP was NOT pleased about my reply.

I will not be buying further HP products. I was particularly unamused by the section about trading in my old unit for a new one... a unit which, presumably, will be abandoned later. Thanks, but no thanks.

I think they use a twain driver for scanning. Please go to System/Library/CFMSupport. There should be a file called TWAIN Source Manager.Shlb. Maybe it is an old one, installed by an older HP Installer. Has your version a size of 8KB?
I had the same problem with another HP Scanner and was able to get it to work with an exchange of that file. You can download a working version at: www.twain.org.

They do. However, the TWIAN driver they use is non-standard. It won't work with Image Capture. (It has never worked with Image Capture; that was one of my original problems with scanning on the PSC1350, dating back to August 2004 when I first bought it.) The 'Scan' button on the MFD, which worked in Tiger (but not in Panther...) now doesn't work (again!) in Leopard. I can scan using the stand-alone HP scanning application.... once. Maybe twice. Then it crashes, and I have to force-quit it and open it again. If I scan from a graphics app, the scanning process opens that stand-alone HP scanning app. If the app I'm scanning from is Graphic Converter, I get a crash right there which kills both the HP scanning app and GC. If the app I'm scanning from is Preview, nothing whatsoever happens. If the app I'm scanning from is Photoshop (CS or CS2, I don't own CS3) I can scan one, maybe two, images, and then the scanning app (and Photoshop) freeze solid and have to be force-quit.

Meanwhile, my nice shiny new Brother MFC-440C scans without a fault. Hmmm...

Yes, it's 8 kB. 17 Nov 2004 create date. That's the very latest version available for my MFD, according to HP. The other items in that folder are dated from October and September 2007, which was about the last time I updated my HP drivers. It seems that HP kept the same old TWAIN source manager, and updated everything else.

I had the same problem with another HP Scanner and was able to get it to work with an exchange of that file. You can download a working version at: www.twain.org.

That site has links to HP... which gives me the same drivers I already have... and links to a download for developers. The developer download would be useful if I wanted to build my own driver, which I don't. Perhaps I'm missing something, and there's a link to where I can get a more recent TWAIN driver for the PSC1350?

Frankly, I don't think there is a newer driver. HP Tech No Support would have sent me a newer one if they had one.

So, be lucky that they provided a new driver for Your MFP laser. All other people are not so lucky. They have bought those machines maybe one or two years before and they wait now and may wait until end of year or HP will decide not to develop new drivers for those 'old' machines. And maybe, if Apple offers a new operating system or update, You will not be lucky too, because HP only provides solutions for the actual system. The whole HP driver architecture (twain and fax) is barely compatible to any standards.
And if a manufacturer tells to his clients, that Apple has changed the folder structure and that the HP installers do not install software, because it does not find the right place to install, that sounds like a big joke. The twain drivers go normally into Image Capture/DataSource and the fax driver into Library/ModemScripts. And I expect from a global operating manufacturer that they are able to develop standard twain drivers and not scraptastic solutions with crippled drivers.
