iMovie voice recording

I want to do a voice recording in iMovie, then extract it and save as an aiff. sound file---I want no video on this project--only sound--can this be done, and to where may I export it? This rather than $80 bucks for sound studio 3.5 or other---AND, maybe there's a great sound program I haven't heard of---thanks

Yes, you can do that. Create a blank iMovie project. Record your audio into the iMovie project. (You can use an external mic, or the mic built into your mac, or make a video/audio clip on your camcorder and extract the audio in iMovie. ) Then in the iMovie menu, go to File>Export>Quicktime. In the "compress movie for" pop-up menu, choose "Expert settings". Click "Share". Set the expert pop-up menu to "sound to AIFF". Clck the options button. Select format Linear PCM, channels Stereo L-R, rate 48 Khz, sample size 16 bits. Leave the other boxes unchecked. Click "O.K." Give it a name. Indicate where you want to save it (I use Desktop). Click "save".

You now have an aiff sound file that you can do whatever you want with. I import mine into iTunes.

Here's another way. Record your voice audio in iMovie. Drag it to your desktop. It will be a .mov file at that point. Import it from your desktop into iTunes. In iTunes, control click on it and, in the resulting drop down menu, click on "convert to aiff". iTunes will create a separate aiff audio file. I haven't compared the quality between the two methods.

I realize this question has been answered, but I thought I'd just mention one other option, and that's Garage Band.

In my opinion, if you're only doing voice, GB is the way to go. Select your mic in MIDI preferences, and you're on your way. The manual is easy to read and understand. You can equalize it, edit it, raise levels without distortion, export it. In all, a great app.

Best of luck.
