How do i install files with a .hqx extension?

Hi,

i'm new to mac and have downloaded a few files, alot of them end with the 'hqx' extension (.sea.hqx, .sit.hqx, etc). When i double click on the file a window pops up asking me to choose an application to open the file, but i can't see any kind of installer app.

i've had a bit of a look on these pages and can't find any postings regarding this, could someone let me in on the secret please?

Thanks,
Sean

Be careful. Most files with that suffix date back from Mac OS 9 days. If you have an Intel Mac, you won't be able to use them. Not all mind you. A few Microsoft ones are newer, and the still don't use the new .dmg.gz compression standard. If you told us what you were downloading and which Mac model you were trying to use these programs on, we could tell you if it is compatible. Applications prior to 2002 primarily were Mac OS 9 with a few exceptions.

Hi brody,

added more spec details to my profile. The 2 files i was attempting to use were an excel spreadsheet (icexcel) and age of empires. it seems most of the files i try d/l from download.com come in this extension.

Seems pretty poor that the OS won't open them. As a very new imac user i've got to say i'm getting more and more disappointed each day. doubt i'll go buying ipods, ipohones, or any other apple products in the future.

cheers for the help though, saved some frustration.

You can find numerous programs to open Excel spreadsheets on my FAQ*:

http://www.macmaps.com/crossplatform.html

As for Age of Empires exists for Intel Macs here:

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/31676

The problem you faced is that the software download website you are using is out of date. Not a problem with Mac compatibility. Macs shifted to Intel back in 2006 which has allowed for much greater Windows compatibility, and much greater software compatibility of what's available currently. In the meantime, tell Download.com to update their database. Additionally, you'll find more software and hardware resources on my page*:

http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html

The problems are more for people with older software or older hardware. Those who have current will have little difficulty finding what they need.
