the disk utility won't burn my dvd DL

I never burned a DVD DL before, but i have a .dmg thats 6gb and needs to be burned. after i selected the .dmg and pressed burn in disk utility but the software wouldn't allow me to burn the file. i got a message saying not enough space in the disk. but i know there is, its a blank dl disk. i get the feeling it didn't recognize the dvd as a dual layer dvd. what do i do, so that disk utility can burn the file.

Mac OS X (10.3.x)

Hi nadk and welcome to the forums!

I see you are still running Panther. What Mac do you have?

Are you sure its Superdrive is able to burn DV DVDs?

sorry.. no i'm running Tigar. I already checked the system and know that it allows me to burn dvd dl. i just don't know why disk utility can't see it. i can burn using Toast, but i want to use disk utility.

You didn't say what Mac you have.

Toast is IMO better at this than Disk utility. If you have Toast, use it.

Hello nadk,

Just making sure. Verify that you do have a dual-layer drive. Apple Menu/About This Mac/More Info/Disc Burning. Does it say DL anywhere?

Second. Insert the blank disk and Open in Finder. Click on it and File/Get Info/Burning. Check the capacity.

i know it allows me to burn DVD DL. but i'll try your second suggestion.

Also its an iMac intel, since i'm not on it currently, i can't give you more information.

i checked the capacity its got roughly 7 gb of space. when i load it in disk utility it says: "the disc inserted does not have enough free space" but i know it does. i'm used a memorex DVD+R DL disk. any suggestions?

Verbatim DVD+R DL shows a capacity of 7.96 GB on the computer.

from what i got from my search, it seems my burn is really picky in what brand of dvd media it will accept. so I'm going to try verbatim (a lot of people suggest that brand) that also explains why Toast allowed me to burn it (but unfortunately not as an image but as a file)

What's your HD's space availability? From what I understand when the Mac burns it needs enough space to create a temporary burn file on the HD prior to burning.

Let me get this straight. You want the actual .dmg file burned into the disk and not the files encapsulated within it. Using Disk Utility will pop open that files contents into the disk and burn the file in. If when you created the .dmg file you compressed it, that file will pop open into the disk and it is going to be bigger than 6GB maybe even more than the 7.xxGB available on the disk.

If just want to burn the actual .dmg file itself into the disk, have you tried inserting the disk/Open in Finder and dragging the file to the disk icon (Rename disk if you like). This will put an alias of the .dmg file in it but it will burn the actual file. Drag the disk icon to your trash which will turn into a burn symbol and start burning--one hopes. This will keep the .dmg file intact.

Thanks everyone for all your help. the problem was my dmg file, for some reason it had free space of 4gb, and because of that the total capacity was 9.9gb which is far more then even a DL disk can take. I did manage to mount it on an external Hard drive, so far everything seems to be ok. Thanks again to everyone for all your advices.
