Leopard installation problem where there shouldn't be one...
I'm running a older (2004) Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 with 1 GB DDR SDRAM My current OS is OS X v. 10.4.11. I've tried several times to install Leopard on this machine and every time, the installer stops, almost right after it starts (i.e., before I can select a volume for the install). At this point, I get the following error message: "MAC OS x v 10.4 or later could not be found on your computer" despite the fact that I am running 10.4.11. I've reset the PRAM, I've tried to install using the Leopard CD as the startup disk and still nothing. Has anyone run into this? More importantly, does anyone know of a workaround? The odd thing is that I've installed Leopard on a newer version of this machine (Dual 2.7 GHz PowerPC G5) without a problem...
Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5,
Mac OS X (10.4.11),
1 GB DDR SDRAM
A few things.
Does the DVD get to the self-check process?
Check the DVD for scratches and/or dirt. Clean if necessary. This has been a problem on occasion.
Boot into the safe mode, then shutdown and reboot and start the install again.
Are you sure the DVD is not marked "Upgrade?" That's what it sounds like.
I had no problem installing Leopard on my 2004 dual G5 (2GHz). I even installed it on an empty second internal drive, so there was no question about looking for a previous system.
No, the DVD never made it to the self-check. It was cleaned thoroughly and I tried to install out of safe mode. Still nothing. I also suspected that it might be an update disk so, this morning, I took it bak in to our (PC) IT guy who manages our licensed software. Turns out the disk came with one of the systems just purchased by our department and it was not an original install disk. I swapped it for an original install disk and it worked fine on my 2004 G5. The strange thing, to me anyway, is that the original update disk that I returned to IT worked just fine on an iMac, a Macbook, and a 2006 PowerPC G5. Bottom line, though is that I was able to complete the install on the 2004 machine. Thanks for your insight and help.
