capturing from beta sp deck via dsr 11

Hi.
I've read a couple of posts on this, but still can't figure where i am going wrong.
I need to capture Betacam sp Pal footage in DV PAl.
Here's my set up:
- Power PC G4 1.5ghz with FCP 5
- DSR 11 deck outputting via firewire to power pc / input is beta deck.
- DSR 11 input selection set to video, and E/E setting enabled in menu.
- Log and capture settings set to non-controlable device - DV PAL codec.

I can monitor sound and image coming from the beta deck when hooked up to a monitor, but it doesn't make it to the log and capture window.
any suggestions.

thank you for your time,

tee.

Try using the S out from the betacam to the S in of the DSR, and change it's input to be S Video... Audio will follow OK...

Jerry's got it-- that little switch on the front panel.

ALSO: I'd recommend keeping a close eye on audio levels in the log and capture window. you'll probably want to lower the level on the beta deck. Stuff always seems to convert hot. Not distorted, but very hot. Dropping the playback level on the beta should work wonders for you.

s-video is not component, it's y-c. Better than composite, but not as good as component. And the dsr-11 does not have any tbc controls available and you the scopes in fcp will show you the state of the incoming video, but you don't have any ability to adjust anything until after capture.

If you're talking about tbc or proc amp controls on the beta deck, some beta decks don't have any available controls.

Hi Michael,
You'r almost right. S-Video is not is not YUV, but is components because the Luma is separated from the Chroma: Y/C is call (where, more or less, C=U+V).
OK a cheap Components interface but we avoid filtering.
The DSR-11 have not TBC, but the Betacam desk should have one. There is where he must adjust the signal. The DSR-11 only will digitalize it and send it via FW.

thanks again for all the contributions.
The beta player is a SONY BVW-75P.( http://www.videoplusfrance.com/fiche_location/134/magnetoscope--betacam-sp.htm)
The video outputs i have at the back are:
_1
_2 (COMP/NON COMP)
_3 (SUPER)
_Ref Video
_component 2 (Y/R-Y/B-Y)
All of these are bnc outputs.
I also have one dub/component 1 output.

Audio is coming out of channel 1 and 2 of the audio output via xlr/rca adapters.

I've started dubbing directly to DVCAM tapes because i still can't get the non-controlable device capture to work.
i've looked as you suggested for an s-video output but can't find one on the deck. So right now video is outputting to the dsr through "Video output 1" with a BNC/RCA adapter.
The dsr is set to video.
As far as the beta deck settings go, i have
TBC control set to local.
TBC - bypass
Video input - auto
Rec inhibit - on
Capstaan lock - 2fd

Input select - composite

The firewire works with the dsr no problem. I can capture the DV tape is just dubbed with no trouble.
But just still can't capture now directly from the betasp deckk.

cheers,

tee.

I dont' think you should bypass the TBC... other than that it's the only way without a capture card to get the video to capture. It should have captured using non controllable device and capture now however directly from the deck. You've trashed preferences right?
