How to create guide/fold lines for brochures

Hello,

I know the easiest answer to this question is just to open up a Pages template and personalize it, but I'm one of those people who has to know how everything works.

I've noticed in the Pages templates that there are blue "guide" lines separating the docoument into thirds. Does anyone know what they are and how to create them? They aren't tabs, and the document isn't broken into three columns. (I'm looking at the Elegant Brochure right now for reference.) I wanted to be able to place these lines on a custom document that is in Portrait rather than Landscape, so I'd like to know how to create them. (Yes, the greeting card templates have the same lines and are in Portrait, but I really want to know!) It's been driving me nuts that I can't figure it out.

Thanks in advance!

P.S. Also: is anyone aware of a good book or website that acts as a "missing manual" for Pages '08? I'd like to be able to unlock all of its secrets.

They are alignment guides. Floating objects snap to them. To create a new guide, click and drag from a Ruler into the document.

To delete one, drag it back to the Ruler.

I do not know of any paper guide to Pages, I'm afraid, but I'm sure someone else will be able to recommend something.

You will be able to find an astonishing amount of information on the web if you google for the right keywords. If you for example are interested in lists, try searching for "iwork pages harvard list -university" (without the quotes).

Some more generic information and links are at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pages .

Yeah, I didn't know what they were called, so I figured that would set me back a little. 🙂

Hmmm...I was able to create an alignment guide just now after fidding with Pages for a few minutes, but I can't make any more. When I tried to make another one by dragging from the ruler, all I keep getting are tabs (triangles). I figured out that when my text cursor is there, I can't get the alignment guides, only tabs--how do I get the cursor to go away?
