What does ambient light sensor do?

I have just bought a used iMac G5 with ambient light sensor and have downloaded lots of documentation. Nowhere can I find anything that mentions the purpose of the ambient light sensor. I assumed it might affect the brightness of the screen but shading it or shining a light on it has no effect.

Not an earth shattering question - just curious.
