I just got Word for Mac recently. Whenever I open a document, the text is tiny. The zoom is set at 100%, but that's too low for comfortable reading/typing. (Now I know why my Mac-using friends always sent me Word documents set at 125% zoom!) I am wondering, is there any way to set the zoom defaults so that all documents will always open at a higher zoom level? Or do I have to increase the zoom manually every time I open a document?

Had to get Word for work purposes, but I was pretty happy with NeoOffice...
I have Office X and I assume the later version works the same. I open a new Word document, manually set the zoom to 200 percent (for my wide-screen 22" flat-panel monitor) type some gibberish, and then save. After that, new documents opened with the keyboard shortcut
command-n pop up at the same magnification. Using the "New..." command from the file menu does not also preserve the magnification.
