Since the last itunes/quicktime update from apple I have been having the same prob.
Quicktime always tells me about the buffer underrun and doesn't work.
Itunes won't open.
I've tried uninstalling, installing them separately (QT standalone first then itunes) and also together but nothing works. I'm no computer expert, but I think we need a hotfix or a patch by apple or microsoft because obviously there is a clash somewhere.

I think that the problem is in any dll and in the registry key.
I say this because i do it reinstalling anymore and deleting all registry key, directory ecc. relate to QT.
When however i reinstalled NOVA (italian software ) the problem reappear and I was not able to solve it!!!
Why a large company like Apple does not support us ?

P.S. Sorry for my bad english

I too was getting that "buffer overrun" problem - I'm using xpsp2. Instead of scrambling for a third party fix, I just uninstalled and went to this link:
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=quicktime
I then clicked on 7.1.0 and installed that version. It works like a charm.

Here's one for iTunes too.

Hey, if it's not broken, why fix it, right?
Peace,

Indeed. I was having problems even uninstalling the Quicktime after getting the Overrun error. So I used CCleaner to uninstall Quicktime, and it kind of did. It said it was, but Quicktime was still in my Start Menu, the Uninstaller would still open, and still had files in Program Files. I just went in the Quicktime folder and deleted it all. Then I went to the Start Menu and ran the uninstaller from the shortcut and it opened and uninstalled! After that I just installed iTunes 7.6 and it runs perfectly.
