Problem with CD drive and iTunes

Hello. Whenever I open iTunes, I get the message that "iTunes was not properly installed. If you wish to import or burn cds you need to reinstall iTunes." I have done this repeatedly and still receive this message. I tried to run a tv show that I purchased and it ran extremely choppy; almost like a slideshow. When I asked for help it told me to upgrade my version of iTunes which is exactly what I did and I still have the same problem. I did see a resolution that dealt with changing registry keys but that person seemed to lose all use of his CD/DVD drive so I didn't want to try that solution without asking first. ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated!

I ran diagnostics and got the following output:

Microsoft Windows Vista x64 Professional (Build 6000)
Hewlett-Packard HP Pavilion dv9000 (GD545AV)
iTunes 7.5.0.20
CD Driver Not Available
CD Driver DLL

Hi and thanks for the reply. I use the CD drive to create CDs and have done so successfully. In fact, after I started typing this, I tested it again by writing data files to a CD-R and did so just fine. Everything is plugged in ok - definitely. There's not much - it's a laptop with wireless keyboard and mouse.

Do you still think I should reinstall my device and then reinstall iTunes? I hate to risk making it worse on myself 🙂

Thanks!

I got the following email from Apple:

iTunes is currently not supported in Windows XP Professional x64
Edition or any 64-bit edition of Windows Vista. Features may or may not work
correctly. One example is reading or writing to an optical drive
(CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-RW). It's also possible iTunes for Windows may
not successfully install.

Unfortunately they don't state this when you download iTunes (that I know of) where it says Vista is supported. Maybe I missed the qualification. If you find a solution, PLEASE let me know and I'll do the same. Do you get choppy videos? I do. I burned them to DVD and they run fine on the same machine. However, if I run them from Windows Explorer or through iTunes -they don't run properly.

Hi. I kept getting the same message (error -43) about itunes. Went thru the suggestions on the help page and reinstalled about 4 times. Then I did a combined fix gleaned from reading a lot of posts (sorry I didn't keep track of all the names!) and it seems to work now (haven't tried the burning bit but the error message is gone). Because it was combined, not sure which was the critical fix bit.

The combined fix was to:
download and install gears for vista x64 (thanks polydorus)
uninstall itunes and quicktime
download combined itunes and quicktime (thanks, x!)
Then, when installing the combined itunes/qtime created a new folder (thanks -x!)
And used the right click to download as an administrator (thanks ceppes) - though on diagnostics it still doesn't think I'm an administrator!

Hope this helps.

I may be back if it doesn't burn!

POSSIBLE SOLUTION:

Should any annoyed soul who had this problem recently care to understand how this problem was solved, here you go:

SYSTEM CONFIGURATION:

* Windows XP
* iTunes 7.5

ERRORS & CODES:

* Type: Error; Event ID: 7026; Source: Service Control Manager; Description: The following boot-start or system-start drivers failed to load...Cdrom, imapi, redbook
* Type: Warning; Event ID: 263; Source: PlugPlayManager; Description: The service "apple mobile device" may not have unregistered

With that background in place, I basically had a totally inoperative CD-ROM; in fact, Windows did not even recognize that I had a CD-ROM drive whatsoever.

So, after much trial and error, I discovered the root of the problem. In the process of (a) installing iTunes and (b) attempting to uninstall it after it didn't work, it appears that iTunes didn't really complete the uninstallation procedure correctly.

What iTunes forgot to do was remove the "GEAR driver" which basically helps iTunes burn & rip from the CD-ROM. So, what I had to do was *manually remove the GEAR drivers*. Here's how I did it:

Manual Removal – 32-bit
Vista, Server 2003, Windows XP and Windows 2000

I've been having the same problem. I was successful in getting my drive back by doing the following (but you need to uninstall itune):
solution
delete device
and open nofilters.reg in batch folder and say yes to merge
note:
*********Copy BELOW this line into notepad *****
REGEDIT4
[HKEY LOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-
*********Copy ABOVE this line into notepad *****
Save to your desktop as "NoFilters.reg" without " "
Open the file, confirm you wish to integrate this file into your registry
and restart your computer.

I updated all my drives and installed the latest itune as of today. And again, my drive is lost, and the above fix does not bring the drive back. I own a ipod video and I use my new vista to synch my ipod.
If someone has a solution to have a dvd drive and itune on my vista computer, it would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks, Manny
