Can't delete Apple folder in "ProgramData" folder in VISTA

When I try to install Quicktime (or iTunes) I get a message that it can't create C:\ProgramData\Apple\InstallerCache. I have found the folder, but am denied access to it. Even after giving myself access to the folder, it still won't allow deletion or renaming. I have a feeling that if I could just delete this folder (and the AppleComputer folder) I could get a fresh start and the thing would install. (I have uninstalled iTunes and Quicktime, but bits and pieces seem to remain.
Thanks, Dave

Yes, I get a dialog box that says "You need permission to perform this action".
(Try again) (Cancel)

I have gone thru the security tab to give myself permission on this folder, but it still gives me the error.

Thanks
Dave

PS, iTunes isn't a problem, I do all my iPod and iPhone stuff on the Powerbook, but I have several programs on this PC that require Quicktime. It is nice, tho, to check out the iTunes store on this machine.

Per your instructions, I tried disabling the UAC. No joy.
I thought I'd try here first thinking that Apple may have done something to prevent us PC users from getting into the folder and messing something up. I'll try Microsoft next and let you know what I find out. (There must be a solution).
At least I learned what UAC means and got a utility to disable it. Apple has a similar protection system, but it has never locked me out of anytning like this.

Thanks for your help b,

I went back and checked my work. I was giving myself permission as "USER/ADMINISTRATOR". I changed it to the other choice, "ADMINISTRATORS" and it worked. I was in safe mode, but it probably would have worked anyway.
Anyway, I was right about being able to do the install if I could remove those folders.

Thanks again,
Dave... Now if I could just get those pesky icons to behave.. Owell..

🙂 Excellent news. Many thanks for the report, Dave: fingers crossed that may help someone else. (These forum posts are googlable, and that particular possibility was one that I hadn't found previous when Googling on your error message ... hopefully it will lurk up the top of those lists for a while.)
