It just aborts the selected download - no crashing/aborting Safari required, but you may need to be quick with those fingers for the quicker downloads 😉
+When I download using Safari a small Downloads Window appears. Simply hitting cancel in that window stops the download.+
An option to 'cancel' would be the obvious way to do, but I've found that it doesn't appear in every download window. I don't know the reason for that. So my question was really how to cancel when no obvious way to cancel is displayed.
As iBod noted some downloads may be too fast to trigger the cancel button but I've never not seen that small gray x button at the end of the progress bar on longer downloads.

It happened to me today. No 'x' button. Is this user-configurable? Maybe I just don't have 'downloads' set up to require that a 'cancel' button appear.
There is no direct command to have a cancel button appear. My prefs are set to download to a folder on the desktop rather than just loose to the desktop and Open safe files is not checked. Remove download list items is set to manual. I can't think of anything else that's pertinent.
