Since installing Leopard the new mail sound is heard well before all mail is received. Also previously while receiving mail the rotating ratchet wheel spun beside the Inbox until all the mail had been received. Is there a reason why these are and not occurring?

I've noticed same or similar issue - I hear the "No new mail" sound, then I receive email seconds later. I also have an issue where I have sounds play for certain INCOMING email. In Leopard (10.5.1), now I have these sounds play when I SEND or REPLY to certain emails. I've checked my rules and can't seem to find the problem.
Perhaps when migrating (mail) from Tiger, the rules became corrupt, or something...
I do not get sound when email arrives, this has been discussed many, many times on this forum for months now.
There still has been no update to fix it yet, it is very disappointing.
I don't understand this either. How long does it take for one software engineer to change one line of code and recompile this module and include it in the 10.5.2 update???
For now, I've just a new rule to perform the bouncing dock icon.
How is this question considered answered? I just installed Leopard 10.5.2 and have exactly the original posters problem. I can't find anything in this thread that suggests any course of action to fix the problem at all.
