USB zip/flash drive or Firewire external harddrive?

Which one do I have to use to store my iMovie projects, and or raw video footage?

I have been trying to use an 8 GB USB flash drive, and keep getting "Disc is full, or read-only, save in another location", even after I traded one in for another brand. Memorex to a Kingston.

I can put other files on it.

PowerBook G4, Mac OS X (10.3.x), OS X 10.3.9 Panther, iMovie 5.0.2, QT 7.3

just got it, it has most available. copied some pics onto it. no problem.

no I didn't format it.
When I try to save the iMovie project onto it. it starts then says the message:
"The new project could not be created.
The disk may be locked, read-only, or completely full. Try saving to a different location."

When I tried drag and drop:
'You cannot copy item "Icon" because the name is too long or includes characters that the disk cannot display.'
But it puts the icon with the right name on the disk with 76 kb, but nothing on it, just pulls up the project.

when I tried copy and paste : same thing.
There is at least 7.5 GB available and the project is about 550 MB
