Audio cd disappears after confirming import

Hi,

When importing audio cds into the library, I often get a strange error.
When iTunes asks if I want to import the current cd and I confirm, the cd disappears from my devices list and nothing happens.

When I reload the cd, it is imported normally.

Does anyone has the same problem and is there a cause/solution?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro 17", Mac OS X (10.5.1), iTunes 7.5

I am experiencing this same behavior. If I have iTunes running and insert a CD the disk appears on the desktop as 'Audio CD'. iTunes then executes the CDDB lookup, often finding the information and flashing it in iTunes.

Following this, it appears as though the CD unmounts (my guess is to remount it at "/Volumes/CD name from CDDB" as opposed to "/Volumes/Audio CD") but the disk never remounts and I have to use "Disk Utility" to eject the disk. Once I eject the "Audio CD" (which is greyed out in DU and not visible on the desktop), I can re-insert the disk and iTunes/OS X will see it and behave properly.

Some help would be useful as this is annoying (especially when trying to show my parents how to load their CD collection into the computer).

Same behaviour over here. Have to load CDs twice, it disappears after checking CDDB. Sometimes it gets even weirder, when all of the CDs I previously imported in iTunes pile up in the source list in the Finder, staying there (unclickable) even after I ejected the disks.

No solution found yet. I hope it gets fixed with the next update.

This issue has been previously reported on the following thread. It appears that it may be linked to upgrading to Leopard. The fix I posted on 12/11, courtesy of Frank Canzolino, another former regular, failed for me today. I have put a flag out for Frank, or any of the other L4/L5's for their input. If I hear anything, I will definitely post back.

After talking to the Leopard support specialists on the phone the past 2 evenings, it was suggested tht I do an archive/install of Leopard, since I had only done an upgrade initially to try to resolve this problem, along with the issue of my disappearing Bose speakers. The good news for me is it appears that the archive/install has fixed my speaker issue. It has not fixed this importing issue. It's my own opinion, now, that there is an issue as to how iTunes may be interacting with Leopard during import, so I urge all of you to send feedback both to the iTunes team & the Leopard team.

Hi,
I've just bought Leopard 10.5.1 and I'm having the same problem, and thought it was my computer, so glad I'm not the only one, sorry people. I tried importing without automatically using cddb gracenote, but it doesn't make a difference. I now have to just put the cd in, wait a few secs, eject it, then re insert and it seems to work. Will definitely be giving this as feedback to Apple.

Hi, all.

Deb tracked me down when she found this issue. I used to be a Windows guy back when iTunes for Windows was first released, and there were some serious hardware conflicts that many of us spent time looking at.

With that in mind, I have a question: What type of drive are you guys using? I ask this because my G4 mini with a combo drive won't duplicate this situation. I did a simple upgrade without even a repair permissions ahead of time.

I have imported a total of 4 CDs today trying various methods. The first couple I had a popup that asked if I wanted to import. That worked. Then I did a couple using the import CD button at the bottom right of iTunes.

I know Deb has a SuperDrive in her iMac, and am curious if the rest of you do as well. If so, we can maybe get a little more attention from the tech guys.

Hi Deb,

Just to clarify the "Superdrive" thing:

All optical drives that can burn to DVD, installed as original equipment in Macs, are called "Superdrives".

The name covers a multitude of different drives installed over the years. Many of them, in fact, aren't all that "super". They often have downtuned firmware installed by Apple that actually reduces their capabilities by limiting burn speeds or compatible media types etc. Most have actually been either Matshita (ie Panasonic) or Optiarc (Sony NEC) or , less frequently, Pioneer drives in recent times.

Your Matshita UJ-845 is a "superdrive", as is the Matshita UJ-857E in the MBP I'm typing this on , too.

Apple installed drives which can read DVD's , but only burn to CD-R, are called "combo" drives. Again they can be from various manufacturers and have come as a vast array of models, speeds, etc over the years.

Cheers

Rod
